On Weapons.

Okay, so I have some thoughts on the small problem that is weapons.

Currently, all factions in the game use the exact same weapons, there is some price difference, and availability issues for some, but for the most part, a Neut2 in Sol 2, is the same as Pyronis, as Dau, as Sedina, as Itan.

Now, what I suggest is that independent corporations should actually manufacture different models of the same weapons. These, "Variants" could have mildly different properties that would make them interesting. For example:

SERCO GAUSS CANNON: could do more damage than the standard cannon, but draw more energy and have a slower fire rate while
ITANI GAUSS CANNON: would draw less energy, and have a faster fire rate, but do less damage.
UIT SENATE GAUSS: Would be about the standard Gauss Cannon now, while some independent companies (BioCom, TPG) could develop interesting and new variations that alter any of those 3 factors, or others, like weight, etc.

These weapons would fit into the national fleets and would fit the mentality of their manufacturers. The Serco would have more damage based weapons because of their heavy-handed mentality, while the Itani could have certain advantages in speed/energy that comes from being more technologically advanced. UIT being neutral would maintain more of an overall balanced weapons platform.

These weapons modifications would not need to apply to ALL weapons, since some weapons (say the...Positron Blaster) could be argued that it is a mass-market weapon distributed by a 3rd party (say TPG). But later on, when there's time, a story could be made for the development of modified variants, like the Serco Military Positron Blaster, and the Itani Defense Force "Mk2" Positron Laser. (or similar)

This approach could spice up and alter the war dynamic a little giving players some new fun, and could be a precursor to some changes to ships as well (such as creating larger national/commercial fleets of specialized ships).

I love how the exact same ideas recur in relatively predictable cycles.

Couldn't find any of the links to older threads, I did look though. If you want to post a few of them here, maybe we can avoid overloading things as happens around here.

The thing to do first, I believe, would be to subtly alter the distribution of weapons across the verse. Once everyone gets used to different types of weapons being more readily available in different areas, a move like this would be more appropriate.

New weapons based on existing weapons with a slightly tweaked stats are very easy to implement and right course of action would be to give existing playerbase some candy and add s few Nation Specific weapons.
We had numerous posts in the past few years about Nation specific ships and weapons but to cut a long story short, out all of that we got NON Nation specific Ineubis Raven, Gauss mk3, Plasma Annihilator, etc.

With all bigger issues to solve this was never a priority for the devs so I revived one old thread from 2004 that points to the right direction and is still fresh and valid now as it was in 2004.:

Who knows, stranger things have happened in VO, so maybe Inc will read this again and decide it deserves some of his valuable time.
