Enough with the Fog already

Sedina D14 doesn't need fog. Neither does Latos N15. Both of these sectors have nice visual features that make them pretty to look at and all the fog does is pointlessly obscure everything in the sector. Why not fog ugly boring sectors? And further, what's the POINT? It's like you're covering up some perceived ugliness that's not there. It detracts greatly from game play as well. D-14 is a hotbed sector that is often host to impromptu furball combat sessions. That's impossible now. It's also often a location for Buswars in the crystal roid cluster. Gone.

If you're going to add "features" please consider whether they actually add to game play, and if they don't, leave them out.

Tumble got a point there and I will just throw my 2c:
Verasi I-5 was (and still is) the best looking station in VO.
Instead of that magnificent sight we now have ugly green fog.

Creating eye candy from ice roids is fine but.... you seen one, you've seen them all.
Verasi I-5 station is unique.

Maybe there should be a mission to clean the smog?

The ability to turn it on and off could actually be really cool. That and a jump interdictor would be hella awesome.

The point of the fog is partially so that they can have more awesome stuff -- shorter draw distances = more free polys/visible item.

The fog in Latos N15 and Sedina D14 was completely unintentional, and was a side-effect of a problem that has since been resolved.

I was in D14, last night, and increased the visual and radar ranges to 4000, and asked if people wanted to keep the fog there (or if it should be removed). And people said they wanted it.

The response on the fog in N15 has also been rather positive. So it seems like the negative viewpoint is not the only one.

I don't really care if we have fog in N15, D14, or even I5. The former two were not intentional, the last was a testbed.

I will be using fog in lots of other places, some of which will have stations. But my intention is to use it largely after reworking the sectors to have much greater object density, along the lines of what Rogue is saying. The inner ring in Deneb is another testbed for this, although the sectors haven't been redone yet.

So, lots more fog is coming, but I can yank it from D14/N15 if people really don't want it. Aside from all the people who do. <sigh>.

Verasi and Dau have been fogged in for months now.... If you move it elsewhere I promise PA will never have a xith party at either station again....

Or you could put it on a 1 week timer...

My suggestion is to remove it from anywhere that it's not actually adding something to the gameplay. You can always turn it back on again when you redux the sector's geometry. I assume the goal of the fog effect is to falloff in some way to cover high poly density objects, which is great once they're there. Right now all we have is obscured everything with no benifit, which is simply frustrating. At the least kill it in D14. It's possibly the most visited and most active station in grey.

I removed it from D14 and N15.

You could also make the fog density a function of how many players fly/don't fly through a sector over a given time period as though it were some kind of pollution. If non-frequented sectors were to become increasingly foggy, players visiting them could use them as safe harbors. Just my 2c...

Generally, I've liked the new fog. *shrug*

I like the idea of having a mission to control the fog. it would be another thing the community has to get involved with together to accomplish this goal. im not much of an idea man, so i leave the details to you guys.

I don't rightly know how we would be able to remove fog from an entire sector through a mission though, shy of a massive Shop-Vac.

However, I think it would work well in mining sectors, or at mining station sectors. That would give a reason for it being there.

um... just make a new item that mounts like a mining beam but all it does it produce dust. Keep enough of them going long enough and you increase the fog level.

Make a new item mount that removes fog in a similar fashion. Have enough of them running for long enough and it gradually clears.

Link fog production, like you suggest, to mining in general (though at a lesser rate than a specific ship addon to make it) and then the very popular fields will soon be hard to work in. Add new missions out of mining stations to specifically clean a certain amount of it up (Carbon Credits, anyone?)

It would make a group mining expedition more interesting especially if they start changing the distribution of resources so the dangerous grey space winds up with lucrative fields. a couple fly escort, a couple get out to the field ahead of time to muck it up and scout, and then the main party arrives to heat up the roids good and proper while getting the ore they want.

Fog should be controlled by the heat of mining in the sector, and should cause one to fall out of warp like storms.
