I have a couple things to add here. I've been watching this and similar threads for a bit, and I generally agree. While the tutorials are useful, they are completely ignored by someone who has gone through them a couple times (most of the people in this thread), and so the option to skip them after a certain point would be completely beneficial (they're not going to see any bugs in them because they don't read them at all).
I was going to post something about mentoring here, but I decided to make a new thread. Thanks for reminding me, Maalik. The new thread is here.

Uh- Unless its changed you can just simply ignore the tutorials and jump to a regular station to take the flight test....the only mandatory one I remember is the first one to buy a ship.
One way to cut down on the alt abuses and still have some flexability would be to allow players to have a public name for the sector list and chat but retain the original name in the character stat sheet (k) so anyone can see who it really is when they are in proximity.....This would give the rats a tool to allow them to sneak up on the unwary. Ship names would also be a way to give characters a way to sneak around as well.
Giving up three or four alts would be a small price to pay for a better way to alter faction as well. A quick name change and a faction alteration could easily turn a serco Pirate into an Itani nationalist with only a minimal amount of grinding.
Just thought....

Make a new alt and discover what we are talking about PaKettle.
What are alt abuses and why do you need protection from them?

Heh , so Impavid /Tumble wants a fast track through to greif noobs ?
Sorry heard it too often ....
Every player has six alternative characters . If you want us to treat each one as a separate character then you start from zero. If not, well, by your attitude shall we know you.
Seriously , I am very much against the idea that folk who cheated the system in the past should be given a head start in the future .

Not sure if you've actually read the thread or not Ecka, but unless Tumble is spoofing forum accounts, then there's a bit more positive opinions on this than just his...
These ideas are more about reducing the frustration and boredom for returning players/vets/heavy rpers/etc/etc/etc. One of the reasons I haven't come back myself is the tediousness involved in leveling a new character.

I agree, its a pain running around doing stuff you have done a ton of times to get a decent alt. I generally have all six alts used... mostly they are for humorous reasons... (Clearly Not a Peytros Alt), RP reasons... (the innocent trader who was driven mad by the murder of his friends), or both... (Space Hobo 13).
It would be cool, and encourage people who want more than to pick one side to play more often... and theoretically spread the word based on an even more positive experience than they already have.
As for abuses... what abuses do we need protection from? I honestly wish to know, because personally, most alts I have come across do not abuse anything?

PaKettle, I think you're missing the point, I don't want a tool for sneaking up on the unwary, I just want anonymity.
(and technically, that would work exactly once, after which, everyone would know the character)
And I think you're vastly overstating the problem of "alt abuses", whatever those are.

Funny though, you see someone cruising in grey, with licenses: 3/3/3/3/3, you immediately go "ALT!", much like if you see someone with -/-/-/-/-, you go "Newb.". I think, though, if people want to keep their alt identity a secret, then it should be an option.
I am not missing the point and Ryan YOU would be my first example of alt misuse if I wanted to do some outing.... :P
VO has two groups.... PVP'rs which want to get to the good stuff fast and RPG types that are more accustomed to grinding and in some cases like it.....
The problem with the alt situation is too many alts cheapen the value of the character, lessen immersion level and reduce player/character identification. While these are not problems for PVP types it is a severe problem when it comes to retaining RPG types. (how many alts do you get in WOW?)
One of the things some here need to realise is Grey space trade will never be what the rats want it to be untill the ratio of traders/ RPG types to rats and griefers is much higher - on the order of 10 to 1. Peytros hit the matter squarely when he said that all he ended up doing was fighting the same people all the time. The situation as it stands is frustrating for both sides when you have a small group of uber pilots ruling sedina and driving off all the average players who cant find a fight on their own skill level.
The Uber PVPers leave after getting tired of fighting the same few guys all the time.
The average pVP'ers leave because they cant win.
The RPG'rs leave because there is no content to hold thier interest and get nothing but grief if they go anywhere into grey....
Unless Guild wants to go back to space quake they are going to have to cater much more to the RPG side of the game so they can retain a lot more players. An excessive number of alts is not good for this purpose.....
(Shape I was implying a player could be allowed to change name on whim but A faction change should be a painfull mission based process to demonstrate your sincerity to the new faction.)

to the OP:
It may have been a while since I created a new character, but I have created a number of them. Last time I jumped strait to the end tutorial and got 1/1/0/0/0 which gave me a centurion and hx, to kill collectors for a half hour to get 3/3/-/-/-. A pain, but a brief pain.
I would like to see vet specific shortcuts. Shortcuts that don't tempt or mislead newbs, but that vets can handle. Like a mission to kill a hive queen with your bare hands or whatever. I once started a new character and hunted hive bots to steal a hfc and then went moth hunting. Great fun. We need more vet related short cuts like that, but they should also carry a warning sign "this guy is an alt!" badge. for example getting a uc by killing a specific hive bot, that is very hard to kill, but that a vet can kill with a cent/hx, but that also gives you a badge for killing it.
I don't care how many characters you have or have deleted. There should be some path that proves you are worthy. It shouldn't be time consuming, but it should prove that you can strafe right and aim and the same time.
Are you really complaining about killing collectors? I can level up in minutes. It is the faction standings that drive me nuts! All those hours of flying back and forth when I just want a gun and ship to shoot people with!
On Alts: I have lost count of how many characters I have deleted. I have probable deleted more pks than the average character currently has. I want more alts. I don't see the point in some people having 6 itani alts. what a waste. I have tani, serco, uit , good guys, bad guys, traders, pirates, pirate hunters, etc... each one their own character for their own interest. None of this guild spying nonsense. I have characters that would kill each other on sight, if only they where able to meet. I like being able to change roles. play the other side. even out the odds.
etc: With a few exceptions, account specific badges should have a per character toggle, to turn it off. If Shape doesn't want his beta badge showing on an alt, he should be able to click a checkbox to turn it off.

That's completely not true. BADLY PLAYED alts cheapen the value of a character and lesson immersion. The onus should be on the player to make or break an RPG alt, not the system supporting it.

uh pakettle you get 8 alts in wow per server
Pakettle, it takes a remarkable smallness of mind to assume that one can either roleplay or be a pirate. I have no intention of dragging this thread off topic to discuss that point, but when you make such fundamentally wrong assumptions, they need to be addressed.
I made no such assumption Ladron.... I merely exaggerated the differances to make a point... Very few play only PVP or RPG Not even myself. PVP will not carry VO and VO will not grow untill there is a rich amount of role play material availible.
Impavid is correct. Well played alts are fun and do add to the game but few here play alts as well as they should. I am not saying get rid of all the alts but six right now is too many. Later when Vo has many more players 6 or even more might be workable. For now there simply is not enough Vo to spread 6 alts around properly.
Pey... I never played wow actually.... hated it.
I have said my piece... on to other matters.

PaK I dont see how a trader driven mad by the deaths of his friends and focuses solely on revenge and perpetuating his one man war on those he views as enemies is an abuse.
Since the alt and "Ryan" have two totally different agendas, maybe you should brush up on the difference between "role playing" and "alt abuse".

LOL Ryan... nice RP of innocence.....
oooh ok, I get it! "Alt abuse" refers to care bear crap and following unwritten rules set down by a few people, I understand now.
Awww.... somebody needs a hug.... :D
Yes, skip the training! Allow pirate characters to grind levels with light and heavy exp for voy escorts and pks.
Hell, it'd be simple enough to implement it think, if you have any characters that are higher than say level 2 on at least 2 categories, you aren't forced to take the training missions.
Sorry pakettle, looks like the vast majority of folk here don't want to go reducing the number of alts per account. And PVP did carry vo quite well for a good long time, so much so that I highly doubt Guild would stay afloat if the pvp'ers you so seem to despise were to cancel their subs and leave. Face it, PVP is far more exciting than trading and mining, that's why their isn't a 1:10 ratio as you would like to see.
