Sector Ideas...

Guys! Enough with the OT physics talk. We agree that you could see a black hole up to the event horizon if it were large enough and it were sucking in radioactive matter (like a red giant or nebula), and that's what matters. This is a thread about sector ideas and skybox artwork, not astrophysics.

As we have no true aliens atm, a battling alien sector is probably out too, but maybe once we have the "exploration expansion". And as for roids that sap your armor, why not simply beef up the ion storms, ions can't be good for your hull, so any prolonged exposure would lower your armor %, which has been mentions a lot in prior posts.

When I made this thread there were some alien bots (by conventional wisdom at least, the furies) and ion storms hadn't been implemented. That said, I agree completely.

Astrofizz:
Um, is there a hole in the gas directly along our line of sight?

Anti-Astrofizz: Yeah, accretion disks, occasional supernovae/comets
in the skybox would be nice.

heh, nice bump Spidey.

I'll reply to each idea with a brief "yes", "no", or a ridiculously long, uncalled for rant.

A sector with black obsidian-glass asteroids that you could only see when the sun reflected off of them (like in that god-awful movie "space truckers")

Yes.

A sector with translucent ice roids; you can partially see through them. There would be a frozen station in one of the larger ice roids, you could see it but to get to it you would have to find your way through a large translucent ice maze.

Yes, except for the station, which is no unless it's abandoned and you can't dock in it (or you can dock, but you can't home in it). I mean, like, why would someone make a station inside an asteroid? Surrounded by asteroids I can understand, but being inside an asteroid would be pretty bad for business. Unless it's a top-secret spy-base that only people with POS standing can see. In that case, YES!!!!!

A sector with a few fiery purple/orange radioactive roids that would slowly sap your armor if you got too close.

Yes, especially if you can mine them for a really expensive ore. No firey stuff though. There isn't any fire in space. Maybe glowy. Heh. Heh heh. Heh heh heh GLOWY!

A "space city" sector that was just one huge station with dozens of lanes, tunnels, alleyways cutting through it and plenty of neon lights.

No.

A sector in the heart of a nebula; radar range would be cut by 1/4 and objects further than 500m would be clouded from view.

Sounds like an ion storm, I'd like it if it was different from an ion storm in any way other than that it doesn't go away after a while, it's marked on the map, and it doesn't interrupt your jump. Maybe it's combustible, so if you shoot, an explosion occurs (somewhat the size of a collector explosion let's say) and damages you.

A sector near a quasar; radiation would interfere with instruments causing radar to give false information and causing homers to go haywire.

Yes, But only in one place in the universe.

A sector in which a constant battle between two warring alien factions was taking place >:D

Hell no.

A sector on the outskirts of a black hole; just an opportunity for some really cool artwork and perhaps a view odd gravitic anomalies ;).

I think if a black hole were to exist, it should be beyond a system, so we can't see it on the map, but it gives us a warning about the gravitational anomalies on the sector info next to the map. You know, the place that tells you about the bots and stuff that's there. It would make your ship a little shaky, and you'd see stuff being sucked into the black hole (far away) like in Phaserlight's pic, but maybe a little less drastic. Just some pretty colours. So I say maybe.

I want my giant epic battle of the space hobos!

Come on devs. The first two ideas are awesome : O

I always wanted transparent(ish) roids but i don't think the engine supports that.

hrmm swarm trails are transparent ish, and the force feilds are translucent too and you cna crash into them too.

i like th eidea of occasionally having navagational hazards like the "black rock" in space truckers (i rather enjoyed that movie)

I like the black roids, the transparent/station roids, the radioactive roids and the city.

some of the best ideas I've seen so far...

I think this would add a sense of reality to the game.....although........this would probably be at the bottom of the priority list........although this wins the coolest idea award definitely.

they could totally add in the black rocks. The problem would be making sectors we already have 'fit' the rocks.

at least adding them to the minimap would be easy, just go crazy with a black marker..

The space city would be awesome if they could keep it from lagging. There could be more than one "station", with little shops that sell specialty items but you can't home or repair there. You could then stick "Wal-Mart" signs on *normal* stations. Also, would it be possible to make your own buildings attached to the city? This is probably another topic, but I want to make a restaurant that serves volatile chemicals. And pizza.

the whole space city idea is actually one that the players could do. not at the moment of course but, eventually...the Devs are planning to have player owned stations. really all we'd have to do is pool our money and build a giant station...or just put 36 stations in close quarters...

example...

Lvl 1 Lvl2 Lvl3

0000 1111 2222
0000 1111 2222
0000 1111 2222

really its just a Rubix cube of stations but it would take some work load off the Devs...(once player owned stations are a reality, and not just the fevered dream of a half mad fool.

The space-city idea seems good, especially for the UIT- they're supposed to be entirely space-based, with stations that are centuries old. Given that populations grow over time, some of the stations should be juggernauts, blotting out the system sun(s), and possibly be visible from the surrounding sectors, much like planets and large moons are now.

Also, the black hole idea has a ton of possibilities. There's the ever popular black hole-star binary, with accretion disks, jets, and gravity lensing (the space behind the black hole would be visible, but lensed around the black hole, making it look less like a black dot as in Phaserlight's post, and more like a circle of nothing that's pushed aside reality, or a patch of sky where the universe is broken. As it passes in front of other objects, they remain entirely visible, just... bent. Properly drawn, the effect is disturbing).

Then there's a possibly more fun implementation of the black hole- the black hole system. It's just like any other system, except that there's no star- just the black hole and orbiting bands of pulverized roids. Since VO's jargonese explanation of wormhole areas only requires the presence of a sufficiently large gravity well, it's certainly possible to link one in. Such a system would be incredibly rich in heavy and radioactive elements, since black holes form in the aftermath of supernovae- the generators of all elements beyond Iron. The mining corporations (and the hive...) would be running each other over to be the first to get a station up and running, though it would have to be of a substantially different design from normal- no solar energy to be had, so it would be nuclear reactors only. It would also be dark, as in "Visual? What visual? Instruments only, buddy."
Aug 15, 2008 ryan reign link
that would be a fun challenge...instrument only flying
Aug 16, 2008 ArAsH link
Don't wanna spoil the fun, but it's still not proven that these imaginary things called black-holes exist. They are still just figments of the imagination of matematitians brains ;)
Aug 16, 2008 LeberMac link
Oh sure they exist, ArAsH. Remember, the Itani have mind powers and force shields!

I like almost all of Phaserlight's ideas. But, that's nothing new. He always has good ideas.

Yeah, I agree that bigger space stations are a good idea. Make the UIT Capital Stations like Dau Senate and Arta Command look really grandiose and impressive.

I stopped reading the replies after a while, but as to the original post, all of those ideas are awesome and would add good variety, especially in combinations.
