Manned Turrets
We did a test the other night with Moths. We loaded up a moth with 4 people and took on a Viper in a cent repeatedly. We got our asses kicked.
Great concept, but they need the same turrets that the convoys have to actually be useful. Right now they just get pwned and the other guy gets 4 kills, which is awesome for the other guy.
SO yeah, suggestion is give us agt turret options! OR just make them Lports and watch all hell break loose!

Um. I think that the current implementation is meant to be more of a defensive weapon...
Wait for the shielded 6 digit armored ships.
I agree with Impavid. The current turrets are not what will make the ships be able to take on single-seated fighter craft of superior maneuverability. Like rogue said, the turrets are supposed to delay/deter the attacker, so that the pilot can make a getaway.
I'm holding my breath for a true corvette class, here's hoping the Trident will fill that role.

I think some turrets need to be relocated on the ships they're on. For example, the Atlas turret is located on the aft-hatch of the vessel, not only kind of impractical from a logistics point of view (how would you unload the ship then?) but also really makes the gunner back there rather useless 98% of the time. Perhaps a top or hull mounted gun position would suffice to cover the 6 o'clock position but also still be useful otherwise.
The initial Atlas turret WAS on the top. I'm not sure if that was better overall, but it could be used both defensively and to help out in a head-to-head dogfight.

Which is why it was, quite correctly, moved to the ass-end of the ship.

Indeed. Better-protected tradeships (of sorts) are all fine and well, and should see more use and applicability. But give me a gunship, or even a corvette. That's where the fun might be at.
