Key binding: Escape key has dual purpose

In game you can bind Escape to whatever you want. /bind Escape +Shoot1

However, escape has a dual purpose. It acts as a fall back mechanism for dismissing keyboard/mouse focus when you are in space. For example, assuming you are not docked, and you are in your PDA view, you may press Escape to return to the flight display.

Likewise, if you've pressed 't' to chat, you can press Escape to cancel this input.

Can we get some way to bind this to a different key (or perhaps is there a way already)? My Escape key isn't exactly in the most convenient position for such a nice feature.

Just so you know, ctrl + [ provides the same functionality as esc (vi addicts rejoice). Perhaps that's a more convenient key combo on your keyboard?

Thanks ladron. Unfortunately [ is not an option. The [ key is present on my primary keyboard but it isn't available on my game keyboard.

Either way it would be great if we could bind this functionality to some other combination. Does the game even support combo key binding with Ctrl + ___ ?

As for vim, I find myself using ctrl + c rather than esc or ctrl + [
