Next turret weapon: railgun!

Jun 14, 2009 ladron link
This is tangentially related to my previous post about a new method for controlling turrets, but I don't want to clutter that topic excessively.

Anyway, the stats:

Railgun Turret
Damage: 2000 (a bit less than the Railgun Adv.)
Speed: 480 m/s
Energy: N/A
Delay: 2 s
Mass: 1500 kg
Targeting: None
Ammo: 30 (This is in a turret so there is more room to store ammo. For the sake of balance, we may need to push this down to 20 though)

There you have it, folks. Recommended usage would be on a combat-support moth in blockade or fleet operations, though using one of these along with two neuts on a trading moth might also be effective.

Only offensive MP ships should carry high-speed, high-damage weaponry. Peytros is right on this one. But it would be nice to have the option of buying Gauss (not capital class) turrets.

Under the current scheme an entirely new class of ship would have to be introduced for a true offensive MP ship. This suggestion is merely a bridge between now and that point; with a reasonable combat support weapon a 3-turret moth could become a reasonable combat-support ship.

Perhaps rails are not the correct weapon for the job, but we do need something to make the turrets actually useful. Gauss might work, though I don't see a gun like that being used any more than the current neutron turrets (i.e. never).

If the concern is that this will make the trading variants of the moth too powerful, perhaps a new moth variant would be appropriate. "Corvus Behemoth Corsair" or something, with a sharply reduced cargo bay (35 cu or something), slightly higher max speed, maybe slightly better acceleration, and 3 hardwired rail turrets. The smaller cargo capacity would make it essentially worthless for trading (since the Atlas can carry a comparable load much faster) and produce the first offensive MP ship with minimal effort on the part of the devs.

FusionBurn and I were discussing a ship like that last night. After further consideration I felt it would be more consistent with the VO style to produce modular weapons instead, but perhaps a new ship variant would be a better way to go. Any thoughts?

Corvus already have 4 ships.

I'm all for a corvette/gunship class, but I don't think current ship hulls can fill that role, with perhaps the exception of the Trident. What would be needed is a ship that can cover most or all sectors with more than only one turret, and still have a main offensive capability, e.g. 3-4 L ports. The latter is far less important than the former, and no turreted ship can currently deliver on either, as I see it.

The suggestion of having turrets with more bite on tradeships still holds merit, in my opinion.
