New In-Station Interface: e-mail

May 03, 2009 Dr. Lecter link
So I'm thinking about the RP uses of PIN locked cargo crates on stations, when it occurs to me we don't have a great system of communicating with pilots. Comm channels are restricted to those online while you are, and buddy note is both particulary annoying to use and not very immersive.

What would be great would be for there to be an "email" interface on the stations, so that I could land, buy a storage crate, fill it with stuff someone else will need, lock it with a PIN, and then email that information (location, crate ID, PIN) to the person I want to use the gear or ore or whatever.

Mindful of spam concerns, I think (1) only paid account characters can send email, and (2) a hard cap on number of "emails" that a paid account can send to any given "email" address per day (maybe 20). The ability to send "anonymously"--not revealing from whom the message came--would add a nice layer of depth.

Lecter, get out of my head.

Also, I second this idea.

Good idea, Doc. This would open up that many more possibilities for missions as well.

Yes, this could be a useful feature, perhaps implemented as an overall improvement to the whole comms system.

Hopefully my inbox would not fill up with offers of Nyrean Viagra, Dantian slimming patches and Pelatean financial scams....

Be honest, Ecka: you're in need of at least the first two.

Yeah, I concur. I've been kicking around how to do some sort of in-game email/IM system also for the purposes of interacting with NPCs (ie, you build a relationship with a given Named NPC, he tells you when he sees interesting convoys passing through, or a particular player you're looking for, special deals on stuff, and so on).

Heh, very true Dr L, but I would buy the real product from Biocom.

peytros inadvertently raises a valid point - I hope /ignore (or similar) would also apply to this ingame e-mail system. After all, 20 ingame e-mails a day from certain individuals is 20 too many.

It already seems in IRC in space, why need email or IM? you have buddy note and channel stuff. email/IM would seem pointless in comparison.

I don't want everyone in my buddy list. Channels are unencrypted, unhidden information. PMs only work when the other person is online.

Communication is important.

The original post pointed out why neither of those are terribly useful in many instances. Try reading, assuming you can (your post about combat in Sedina indicates that you may be mentally retarded or illiterate, and this post appears to confirm one or both of those as definite possibilities).

Lecter, By all means you can ask for new lame crap like this all day long but it's not practical nor of any productive use in your posting. You said this about the notes:

"and buddy note is both particulary annoying to use and not very immersive. "

"The original post pointed out why neither of those are terribly useful in many instances. "

So besides 'annoying to use' could you possibly offer anything of value besides your endless rants of petty bickering? If not then you can go take a shotgun to your face and spare the world the endless drama.

In reply to your start of mud slinging; you can go fuck yourself if you think I am mentally retarded or illiterate because it's clear as day you have no clue as to what you are talking about. You can also lay off that slant unless you want it right back at you.

Do I really have to spell out (in small words, no doubt) why buddy note, a messaging system with text commands and that is limited to those pilots you've already added, is "annoying to use" or all the negative implications that lack of functionality has? Or how limited comm channels are?

Please, prove me wrong about your lack of mental capacity and say I don't.

Funny, though, that there has been a uniformly positive reception to my suggestion here--aside from your poorly written drivel.

I think this is a good idea.
