Auto-shoot the gun with more ammo when multiple guns are on the same trigger
Here's a hypothetical situation: I have 3 railguns armed, all on one trigger.
1)I fire all three in a volley.
2)Soon after (but before my battery recharges), I have another shot, so I fire. Of course, only one or two shots fire depending on how charged my battery is.
Repeat steps 1 and 2 for awhile.
Because the first gun always fires if there is enough energy, I end up with weapon ammo distributed like this:
gun1: 5
gun2: 9
gun3: 12
Eventually I'll end up with something like this:
gun1: 0
gun2: 0
gun3: 5
... FAR from an ideal setup. EDIT: the reason this isn't ideal is not a mass issue, but rather it is far more advantageous to fire shots in parallel (higher damage) instead of just in series (lower damage).
What I'm suggesting is that the gun with the most ammo be the first to auto-fire (instead of gun1 always being the one to fire first). The algorithm to do this is incredibly simple, and wouldn't require much effort.
Pros: ammo-based weapons end up with better distributions over the course of a prolonged battle. In the above setup I'd most likely be left with ammo in the configuration of 1,2,2 instead of 0,0,5.
Cons: A player may not instinctively know which gun is going to fire. This could be taken care of by a small indicator on the HUD... or we could assume the pilot is smart enough to keep track of the numbers and know which gun will fire.
I am really only suggesting this for when you have multiple of the same gun on one ship, not when you are mixing and matching (as that might prove more troublesome).

This can be easily accomplished by heightened awareness in combat. What's more, you do not need to really watch ammunition distribution, since there are no drawbacks in inertia due to ammunition having no mass. And if it did, I'd empty my outlying weaponry first.
I say nay.

I could try to make a plug-in, shouldn't be too hard I think. want me to?
tosh there's a reason to keep ammo spread among all guns. if you have it all in one you can't shoot it as fast
(ie only one at a time instead of both.)

maq is right-on as to why I want this (heightened awareness in combat has little to do with it): Being able to shoot from both (or all) guns is far superior than shooting from just one. maq may also be right that this belongs more as a plugin than a built-in game interface. I'd like to get a little more feedback as to whether this is something that others believe belongs as part of the game... otherwise yah, I'd love you to make a plugin :).
It is possible to keep track of one's own ammunition. I still don't think this should be implemented by the devs.
Plugin, yes.
Plugin, yes.
Alright, I trust your judgement. plugin it is!
and for it, I'll pay you a million spacebucks (or something :)!

It'd only be for rails right? (can't think of anything else that requires ammo and noticable energy?)
Might work for screamers as well, but that's all I can think of.
