New User, New Ideas
Firstly, as a new subscriber to VO, I would like to introduce myself to the community. My name is spacehogg and I fell in love with this game within the first few minutes of the trial. Had to buy a month.
A few ideas I had:
1) Navigation / Course Plotting:
I noticed that when plotting courses you can shift+click to navigate around asteroids. It would be neat if you could make amendments to courses already plotted. (i.e. click and drag from any point on the course to add a stop in between.)
2) PDA, Station Menus:
It would be very convenient if there was some sort of right-click option in the game menus, to instantly assign purchased weapons to a port, for example.
3) Radio:
Have some kind of access to web radio or iTunes, etc., through the console.
Word. See you out there.

Good suggestions :) Gotta say, it's nice to have a refreshing set of ideas, beyond the fog of "omg, make players have caps NAO" and such.
Navigational Computer Revamp: Has been suggested before (by yours truly), and I wholeheartedly support the re-posting.
Contextual Menus: I think it's a good idea.
web radio/iTunes control: Meh. I don't think it's necessary. But perhaps there are enough who do?

re itunes: I tend to play in windowed mode so I can control such applications as itunes. I'm betting the devs wouldn't have time to make something more than a built-in feature to advance or replay tracks in a playlist, pause, etc (many games have this already). Such features can be done yourself, however, by installing plugins that tie key commands to such features no matter what app you're in, or by buying a keyboard with hardware buttons for such functions.
I'm all in support of your 1&2 ideas though. Not to mention: welcome to the game!

There is a plugin for controlling some music players. the player must of course be controllable via tcp.
Devs wouldn't likely be able to do much more either.
Unless you want vo to have inbuilt player, but that i think, is not worth it.
Personally i find that setting global keyboard shortcuts in winamp is sufficient (and an occasional alt tab).

I'll definitely start checking out those plug-ins. I agree, now that I think about it, that the radio is by no means crucial to the game. I'm sure I'll be able to come up with something if I look hard enough.

No shit? Really?

Yes, maybe, and yes. I'm imagining each system with its own radio station with faux commercials, public service announcements etc. voiced by the devs, various guild leaders and in character personalities. Even just one universal radio station, if it could be pulled off, might make the universe that much more immersive.
(Some examples of other games that make use of 'fake' in game radio: SSX 3, Grand Theft Auto...)

I agree with Phaserlight, though radio hasn't been paramount in any game I've played, half the fun of playing GTA was listening to the insane people on talk radio.
