"Ships that carry more cargo, but at the price of defenses promote trade in safe areas."

Well, that is certainly one opinion...and based on this we should naturally scrap any large trade ship, lose the Moth XC, abandon the idea of player owned Cappies and stations...etc...etc... because based on this opinion no one will leave nation space.

I travel through Grey all the time in moths, and unless I go right through Sedina B-8, I almost never see a pirate. So perhaps a good counter point would be...what risk? what danger?

That is true only if they promote trade at the price of defenses. The XC was a pretty terrible idea, as now every single trade ship before it has that much smaller of a role to play. The regular 'Moth is to the XC as the Marauder was to the original 'Moth, and the only thing the Atlas and Centaur are good now is combat. I'm hoping that Capital ships will promote trade in grey because of their enhanced defense systems. Stations don't trade at all.

You are taking my statement, and translating it into an ultimatum. Of course people will leave nation space. However, assuming no other changes, fewer traders will, and a common theme lately is getting traders into grey, evidenced by the high profit trade routes recently created there.

"I travel through Grey all the time in moths, and unless I go right through Sedina B-8, I almost never see a pirate. So perhaps a good counter point would be...what risk? what danger?"
That is precisely why the Greyhound, and new trade routes were implemented. Now that you may be carrying something valuable, and pirates have the tool to get it, you may indeed be in danger. Your suggestion is hardly a bad one, but merely contrary to the current theme of the game. A lower cargo, less risky 'Moth would be the way to go. (Or a higher cargo Marauder, perhaps.)

I'm with you on the original moth and even the Aelous moth I don't have much call to use them. I'm also with you on the higher cargo Marauder or making it as it was intended to be...something of a space freight train.

On the other hand, I don't see the benefit to a "A lower cargo, less risky 'Moth", especially when the suggestion is for a large unarmed ship with shields. Sure there is no offensive capability but the shields give it a definitive defensive capability. So despite the lack of weapons, it has a better chance of making it through a gray space trade run. Currently if I'm trading (bulk) in gray I'll use a mining moth with a good weapons load, this is assuming I believe there will be a risk...other wise, I use an XC and take certain measures to see to it I lose any pursuing ships...(which is very easy).

actually the centaur is one of the safest ships to travel thru grey in...

The Avarice would make trade in grey appear a bit safer.... untill the rats figure out how to kill it.

Since it hasnt been mentioned it should be obvious that it will take more then a mere fighter to be a serious threat which gives the ragnarok a new role. It will also mean the rats will have to cooperate but due to the slow speed they will have plenty of time to organise. Typically a rat will spot it cruising thru grey and seemly ignore it while calling for reinforcements. They would have to make a quick trip to base to switch to a rag and then meet up with the Avarice. Payment demand should also be interesting since the ship itself is 1 million plus cargo...

As I suggested earlier the ship is not meant for everyday use but rather as a status symbol for those traders who excell at thier craft. If the requirement is higher then trade 4 then only a select few would ever be able to use the ship. That is why I suggested a billionaire badge....

Myself the only time I use a moth in grey is to do bulk proc missions to up my standings...I just simply accept the fact that I will lose a few....The moth is far to costly and defenseless to be used in grey on its own.
