Simple solution. Go to IRC, register some silly name. Sit on IRC and read chat.
Nobody will know its you and nobody will even care to ask who you are.

I guess perhaps I should clarified further?
I would like to continue reading the chat while playing without anyone knowing I'm online or playing the game unless they've actually seen me while flying through a sector.
Anyways, Incarnate mentioned that there were plans to remove the Active Player list and that sort of solves the major issue I have. I specifically wanted to delete the thread, but I guess you can only delete specific posts you've made :\
