random communication relay failure
To add a certain level of interest, there could be random communication blackouts of systems and/or groups of systems.
i.e. Latos could suffer a failure where no communication to/from any other system was possible. A failure could cut off all or most of serco space from non serco space. etc...
In addition to random events, there could also be load based events, where if a large number of players log in at once, communications failures could segment the communications network. This could allow the game to scale to extremely large numbers of players, while maintaining a community friendly atmosphere in chat.

I'm not clear what your getting at here Roda. Are you talking about general chat like 100, pm's, group and Guild? Or something else entirely?
I would think it would have to cut through every communication channel- including IRC. Perhaps exempting the help channel, though this would potentially undermine the whole point of the outage.
But yes. That would enhance the game. I would suggest being in an ion storm should limit your ability to communicate to 1000m or so.

I would like this to go a step further.
Remove the idea of General, talk-to-everyone chat unless you are in a Station. The ships we currently have don't fit the bill for communication on such a large scale.
I say players can only communicate with 'everyone' while docked at a station (or possibly in a station sector)? Perhaps there could be 'relay nodes' at certain sectors that, when a player is in the same sector, communication is re-established with 'everyone'.
With the addition of player owned capital ships, this would also open the ability to talk 'globally' while in your cappy ship... if not globally, then the ability to talk to 'everyone' within a few systems away from where you are.

I agree in principle Myth, however, my concern would be that you would have more people just station sitting so they could chat- like me, since chatting on 100 is a big part of my game play. And if thats the case, why even bother coming in game when you can just sit on IRC.

Agreed, but don't want.
