Okay so I'm a returning player from about 6 months ago, or more. I played a trial on a new account, subscribed and had it clear before the trial ran out, yet the game didn't recognize this and unceremoniously kicked me after the trial timer ran out.

It's not a big deal, I could log back in no problem. It'd be more annoying if I'd been fighting something at the time.

I just think it'd be an improvement if the game checked to see if subscription status had changed before kicking someone off the server.

That's rather odd. I just did the same thing, played the trial up until about 30 minutes left, subscribed and logged right back in. Never kicked me out.

Were you logged in/alt-tabbed when you subscribed?

Yeah I was logged in, for a couple hours before I subbed, and then another hour or so til it kicked me. I had a feeling it was going to when it said "You have 5 minutes left" after my acct info on the site said Subscriber.

It's so not a big deal, I just thought it'd be better if it detected that. Perhaps changing the next "You have x minutes left" to "Thanks for Supporting VO! Enjoy your.. blah blah" when the system detects the change.

Yeah that definitely sounds broken.

We should heartily welcome new players, maybe give them a cool ship or something when they go from trial to subscriber.
