Mining heat curve

Jan 06, 2009 PaKettle link
I dont know if anyone has mentioned it but the new heat curve on the roids is a bit much. It should not take an hour to extract a moth-load of ore form a roid at 10k with two hd beams.

I would suggest the next time your in-game to grab a moth with two hd beams and try it for yourselves....

It takes maybe 20 minutes if you go to different roids...

If this is true, its lame. Mining is no fun - it should not be made harder.

Are you sure something has changed? I was minering a bit today and didn't notice a difference.

I'd say it is difficult to accurately assess the specific heat of an asteroid, mainly because it is so hard to get accurate figures for mass and volume. Extensive testing would be in order, by multiple people... and you would have to have figures to compare the new ones to. And that is probably impossible to obtain.

When you use the same roids it is easy to notice how long a load takes particularly when I always start at 10K.

One person (me), 12 minutes, 1,500 cu's of ore. Max temp 100K.

Looks that way.

As far as I am aware, we have made zero changes to the heat curve of asteroids, or anything else related to mining. The closest change I made was altering how quickly the prices for mined ore bounce back in the economy.. not related to heat.

If people are seeing something strange about the heat of asteroids, please let us know. It's always been relatively easy to raise the heat of very small asteroids.

The size seems to be where the effect is at... very noticable on the smaller ones....

Perhaps you altered their mass somehow?

That would be very, very surprising. But I'll bring it up to the other devs..

There are small roids out there (small enough an XC can pick it up and put it in the cargo hold) that a few cu's will melt things. While other large ones takes some time. The difference for most of them is super small and those I just mentioned are the exception to the rule.

In the end I can mine other roids..

Know what would be cool? A cooling beam, same basic stats as a mining beam, cools roids at the same rate as a mining beam heats them.

soo... infinite mining?

There are things that would make infinite mining unlikely. The economy is set up so that the more of A you bring to a station the less it is worth. Also, the better prices for ore seem to require you move to another system to sell it...(at least in my experience). How ever, if you're concerned about people getting too rich by mining, it could be worked that the grid use would not allow a mining and cooling beam on the same ship. that way a person would have to mine, leave change ships, go back, cool, leave change ships, return, mine repeat. Or find some one who does not mind wasting their time to cool the roid for you.
