Request Economic Preparations from the DEVS

Dec 27, 2008 PaKettle link
First off I know the economic projects are mostly on the back burner. I do however have two items for the DEVs to put on their to-do list.

1: Please create an economy sub-forum to help keep information together. It would help to sort out other topics as well.

2: Please consider moving all current economic data to a separate server. This server could also host news and guild activities as well. This will keep tasks that are not time sensitive away from the PvP servers and prevent lag. It will also aid future expansion and economic work to take place with a minimal disruption to everything else. (I can elaborate if you wish)

If you (The Devs) are interested In this please say so and I will post a massive amount of info on how to setup a dynamic and player controlled economy including an incremental rollout method. If I am wasting my time then also say so and I will move on to other things. If you prefer to discuss this elsewhere you may reach me at my e-mail address.

I almost forgot...
If anyone knows of any thread(s) that deals with the economy please post it here. My searches have not turned up very much.

The economic projects aren't on the back burner at all, but are integral to virtually every change that has been made or planned recently. There have been significant adjustments just this past month that support the overall plan (ship prices, trading changes, and storage size, for instance). See the Newsposts for these. The major changes should be evident during the first half of 2009.

Regarding 2) There's an idiom: "Don't teach your grandmother to suck eggs." which essentially means "don’t give needless assistance or presume to offer advice to an expert". The devs come from the ISP industry and have considerable expertise in network design. They've been making scalable changes all along with little to no disruption. These changes have been reported along the way. http://www.vendetta-online.com/x/msgboard/1/20268#252167

I can't think of a thread that lays out the whole plan. There are bits and pieces throughout the forum, but I'm fairly sure there is no massive post from the devs on the subject. The plan would be time-consuming to post, subject to change during implementation, and possibly subject to manipulation if all was made known to the community.

We have very different Ideas on what constitute an economy. The present system while fine for short term play Is very lacking in longer terms.

I am looking at a fully dynamic system capable of going from complete economic collapse to hyperinflation both on local and global levels. It would also consider system and faction influences. It would influence the availibility of weapons and ships as well as create missions based on the situational needs.

This economy would be able to create the conditions needed to trigger nation, faction and guild wars greatly increasing the overall depth of play needed for long term hardcore usage.

This level of economic activity requires a large amount of high level math and detailed bookkeeping. A single update pass will require at least 100,000 equations which would seriously lag any server it ran on.

I will leave it to the Devs to decide If they want to persue the matter.

You have no idea of what I might think constitutes an economy, as I have stated no ideas at all here.

There is no question that the present system is inadequate for the long term, though there is some debate as to its adequacy for the short term.

Have you considered how many equations it takes to render an asteroid? Let the devs handle the server clusters.

yes and we will let the Devs decide if they want the suggestion as well....

"What? I came in here for an argument!"
"Oh, oh I'm sorry, this is Abuse."
"Oh, that explains it."
"You want 12-A, next door."

PaKettle makes a good point, the devs have previously asked its member base for detailed ideas about how to go about fixing the economy, instead of simply complaining about it. And he's right, a truly dynamic economy is going to require a dedicated server to handle the sheer load of constantly calculating and updating
