Alien Combat Sector
Where instead of PvP, it is an on-going skirmish between The factions and a mysterious alien race. (name and etc. I haven't just thought of, you can tell Im making this up as I go along, can't you?) Anyways, there is a sector linked to each home sector via a sort of 'artifical wormhole' (jump gate) created by these aliens several hundred years ago. They are linked to a sector limited to say, level 5 combat licence or something reasonable.
Inside, instead of things like collectors, you have to face the alien flagship's (frigates, destroyers) They use fighters as well, so only a co-operative effort will succeed. I know the playerbase is a bit small for this at the moment, but in the future it could happen. It would promote co-operative play. The fighters of the group that enters would need to defend the group's bombers, likewise, the bombers would have to stay together and focus their firepower onto weakspots and make passes. The alien's would be quite tough to destroy. However, when a 'Frigate' is destroyed, the whole group would gain, say, +500 Combat exp each. That is why I am saying make it excruciatingly tough. I know I have only the 8 hours of my trial to go on as per the game, but it has already captured my imagination.
In time, as the number of players increase, you could add 'staging outposts' to let players take alien-combat missions in groups (Destroy alien frigate at X-X) Or single, (scout sectors X-X, X-X and X-X or Steal a datapad from Sector X-X)

The ships of these alien's would be almost like 'shards' Triangular shards of some sort. I'm no good at 3d design, but I can draw up a few sketches of what I would percieve as the different classes.

What's wrong with the Hive that you want to introduce some ill-defined new race to serve what seems to be a very similar purpose?
