Request for a "FF & Faction redux" addition
FF & Faction redux implementation is as good as any time to consider adding Unaligned (Corvus) and Akanese factions.
Imho, it would improve overall RP and game content.
This has been mentioned numerous times, I know, but...
here is one of the treads that newer players could find interesting:

Are you suggesting adding these two factions as nations comparable to the Itani/Serco/UIT or more like political counterparts to corporate factions (Valent, Axia, et al.)?
Either way, the Akanese, being a secret society, are going to have a basing problem. I wouldn't be adverse to missions involving them, however.

We cannot call them nations so idea is to make them a part of player selectable (character creation) faction.
Some restrictions should apply. Ability to create a char in those factions or transfer your existing one should be available after 3 months of gameplay or after you reach certain levels.
For beginners (newbies) those factions in character creation can be grayed out (with a short explanation).

We are considering an unaligned option for players, which has nothing at all to do with Corvus, never did and never will. I am not comfortable adding a playable Akanese faction without all the backstory, content and gameplay that would go along with such an addition.
Why not let the unaligned option be part of a set of missions? That way you will not have newbs that are unaligned by accident. Same thing could be said for the Akanese, but these should be more on the lines of corp factions surely. You would still be Itani otherwise it makes no sense..
Maybe along the way you can be twice aligned, like in birthright (UIT, Itani, Serco) and your preferred faction like Valent/Corvus/Xang Xi/Akanese. Again, as a conclusion on a set of missions. That way you would have computer controlled guilds but you would effectively have "guild/faction" controlled stations. This would have to be after the system has been re-worked off course.

Aaaaand I am sure that Inc and co has thought of this already.

Brilliant solution Whytee. :)
Not sure if Incarnate thought of this since he never went into details about his opinion on unaligned/akanese suggestions.

Not to mention, one would probably have to start out as Itani to become Akanese, so the Serco and UIT would probably have to have their own 'SpecOps' faction so as not to imbalance the game too much in favour of the Itani/Akanese faction conglomerate.

Write your new backstory then Toshiro.
I am tired of ppl who always have to have their precious balance.
Lets just take out all VO ships and weapons except a free bus and a free gun or even better give access to everything to every single player as soon as he subscribes.
Equal opportunity for all, have your precious faction balance in a boring Toshiro game.

I thought SCAR was the equivalent of the Akanese....
/me ducks (and quacks as well)
the Serco can always use their infamous Diplomatic Service. Or the just as secretive GESTEBO. I know of at least a couple of characters that would leap at the chance;)
And in case this made no sense... read this:

Bojan, the problem with specially treated factions, such as Akanese like described in your suggestion post, have a sign "JERK MAGNET" all over it.
Can I use WoW as an example? (You have no time to answer so I will) In a new expansion they introduced a new class, which is not available to new players (like you suggested for Akanese), has a special starting zone (like Akanese systems) and uses some new game mechanics (I think part of your vision of Akanese too). Guess what? Everyone and his mom created a charater of that class. And now the game is filled with poorly played characters, because while that new class is relatively overpowered (like your suggested special ship variants), it's actually not the easiest class to play effectively (and Akanese are supposed to be a hard mode faction, right?).
Whatever you say about balance, if we create a new cool anti-Serco faction, that will only lead to an even bigger disproportion of Serco/anti-Serco population. And if you haven't noticed: even without Akanese there never is a (serious) "there is need to be more Itani" thread.

I understand why you keep suggesting adding Akanese. Akanese will be cool and fun for Itani nationalists. Well I'll give you a VO example of what fun factor does to game balance.
Guild roster of VPR: http://www.vendetta-online.com/x/guildinfo/19/
Guild roster of CLM: http://www.vendetta-online.com/x/guildinfo/54/
CLM == jerk magnet. VPR == less fun. Every jerk is happy to smack talk about the Vipers, but the bottom line is:
- shooting traders - fun;
- escorting traders - boring.
This is a dominant opinion in VO comunity, though it can be different for each individual player of course.
Now imagine the world where Serco have to compete with Itani AND Akanese. Which side will be more fun?
(Note: I am not saying that every CLM member is a jerk)
(Note: I am not saying that I find shooting traders more fun than defending them. I am saying that this is a dominant opinion in comunity)

Why should the Itani get a special faction?
Seriously, the game is entirely too biased towards them in many ways as it is. (See multitude of relevant posts on BS, BP, and CtC)
However, I *do* think having a general unaligned faction that operates out of no where in particular (you're unaligned right?) is a great idea. Having a mission or a short tree of them would keep newbs from doing it accidentally.
Maybe this initial "Renounce your citizenship" mission turns all of your faction standings back to neutral or something that would give someone a moments thought before proceeding...

Sounds like socialism to me. ThePeoplescube.com :)
Agreed; balance doesn't exist in reality folks, not in military terms for sure. That's why unconventional forces fight the United States the way they do; cause they can't win face to face with the regular army. In this game, there are items not balanced which I myself enjoy. Balance would make this just another mmorpg.

Yeah, but in this case, everyone wants their side to be the US.
The problem with balance is that if it's not there, the whole conflict would end up being a one-sided conflict. If this were in "reality" as you said, and the Itani got all the awesome stuff, there would be no serco, just a minor rebellion.
Normally I like reality, but in this case, no. Reality may not have balance, but without it, it's boring.
As for the faction stuff in general, I still believe that UIT/Serco/Itani should be birthplace simply. If you happen to stay with your birth country (as most people in real life do) good, if not, being unaligned or aligned with anything else should be possible.

This could easily spill into another thread, but here goes.
Disclaimer: This is a long time from happening :(
Do not have balance; instead have the different warring factions develop new ships, faster, better, bigger, (cue music), stronger, etc about every two months. I.E. in April the Serco come out with a shiny new fighter that beats the pants off of the Vaulk. Itani then in June develop a better fighter that replaces the Vaulk and so on and so forth. Maybe instead of a better fighter, a better bomber. That is war. You steal ideas and modify them for your side's benefit. Get my dirft? Non-balance is key with a shifting of favor toward one side or the other. Since this war isn't going to end, we keep shifting balance from one to the other.

Oh man, so many cons and so little pros.
Looks like nobody really read everything about Akanese faction.
So here are a few facts again:
It would be very hard and unpopular to play akanese because:
1. they are hated everywhere, even in Itani space (except a few stations)
2. they cannot do regular trade mission anywhere but in their own system and with some factions in greyspace
3. there is no advanced technology in akanese hands. They use the same (slightly modified) Itani ships. Modification are irrelevant, they could be as well using the same ships and weapons as everyone else.
4. And again, they are extremists so officially all governments in known space are against them. There are no NFZ protection, no border turrets to help them and everyone can shoot them.
As for being a jerk magnet... you can be a jerk in any faction or any guild.
Why would a regular VO griefer leave the comfort of his faction standings and protection to become akanese hunted by all?
Only real reason why i am persistent in this suggestion about implementing akanse is a chance of a better immersion and RP in VO universe.
If "jerk magnet" is the only problem then lets deal with it in a different manner.
How about this:
players can apply to devs to become akanese.
We leave up to their discretion who will be allowed to become one or not.
They have all available info on all players and their chars and they know who jerks and griefers are.

I really look forward to the addition of an "Unaligned" faction. And I also agree that such and option should not be available to starting players. Minimum levels, and perhaps a mission tree, should be required.
I always thought that confining the limitations to becoming unaligned should be related to pirates, and turning on your home nation, but I don't truly believe that 'good' people should not be able to be unaligned.
I have no comment on the Akanese other than they be similar to the unaligned in not being a starting option.

As far as I know i'm the only "active" Akanese in game (yes i said it I am one :) I don't like the option of being a sub-faction of Itani. If the mission was available now with what you suggested, Bojan, I wouldn't take it.
Being akanese is supposed to be secret. But if you view my actions and comments toward the serco scum and itani traitors you could easily guess it. I've worked very hard not to confirm that view over the past 4 years, but of course its true.
If i was Akanese under your system i would be like i was a 2nd class citizen. Not being able to dock or trade at every station like everyone else would suck. People might make an alt to be Akanese but i doubt anyone would stay that way.
I'm Itani but i'm also Akanese. If i had to choose one i would be Itani.
Sorry i have no suggestion to make the system better though. I think any act that would make it a "formal" part of the game would be wrong and wouldn't fit in with the backstory. Even forming a guild would be wrong. If everyone knows, how is it a secret society?
