Some Suggestions
I have been playing VO for over a year. Just the other the day I tried out EVE for the first time. It's awesomely boring. It looks fantastic but the gameplay is just bogus. However, playing EVE did give me some ideas that I wanted to suggest, so here goes.
How come when we turbo nothing changes in our environment to signify we are moving at "incredible" speeds. Maybe if the stars were to streak, or the space junk were to streak, or the roids could stretch or something.
Why is there only only 1 point of interest per sector? As far as I know, I can travel to the edges of that sector, so if you ask me, that's an awful waste of space. Why can't we have more than 1 station in a sector. How about a huge roid field 30k from station, which brings me to my next idea. How about a warp drive (or 2nd lvl turbo). This turbo would allow us to go around 500 m/s maybe even 1k. Maybe you could only get this warp speed if you are 5000m out and at full turbo.
Why isnt the map system 3D? When I look at the map I feel like we are in 2d space. Why can't Jallik be under Divinia? A map with full 3d rotation and panning would be awesome.
And finally, the ships. Our ships look like they were made in 1970. No offense guys! I am sure it would be hard to revamp all the ships, but they could be so much better.
I don't know if any of you developers have played eve, but i think you should. they have the right idea, but you have the engine. That's where you rock. If you could take some of these elements and put it on your engine, you guys would be unstoppable bigillionaires :)
Thanks for you ears

We're not going fast enough for stars to streak or for roids to stretch. Space junk maybe -- but only because of the relative size and proximity to the ship. Seeing as you're using EVE as your comparison point, I'll do the same here: the fastest you can travel in VO under your own power, even with turbo, is 225m/s. Most frigates in EVE go faster than that, without afterburners/microwarpdrives/etc.

This is already being worked on in bits and pieces; Incarnate has expressed an interest in having multiple stations per sector -- in fact I recall him saying something about Dau L-10 being a good site for testing this, with the big roid cluster off in the distance making a good place for one of the smallish roid-based stations. Quoting Incarnate: "Ironically, some of my current goals are not so much "expanding" space as actually using what we already have. For instance, intra-sector navigation, with multiple stations within a given sector, and nav waypoints to head for and so on. We have a great deal of space, and use very little of it at present."

We have 30 systems. EVE has over a hundred times that many systems. A 3D system map is merely eye candy right now and not worth the time and effort until we have so many more systems that a 2D map becomes unreadable or too cluttered (much like EVE's map is when viewed in 2D). In addition, most things in a solar system are along the plane of the ecliptic -- so the vast majority of points of interest would be along what is effectively a 2D plane anyway.
And finally, the ships. Our ships look like they were made in 1970. No offense guys! I am sure it would be hard to revamp all the ships, but they could be so much better.
I'm pretty sure that when the devs have someone who can serve as a dedicated artist, this will happen a lot faster. Right now they're trying to deal with fixing gameplay issues, some of which have been present in some form or another for years at this point. They simply don't have the manpower to do this right now.

i understand that we dont move at 6au/s like in eve. i also believe that we cant because it would be way too easy to run. however, aside from the "physics" of things, i still think it should "appear" that we are hauling ass through space.
as far as the sector space, thank you for pointing me to that link, even though it was posted almost 3 years ago, it's nice to know someone noticed.
The 3d map may be eye candy, but that is just as important as gameplay, imo. sometimes, its the eye candy that catches a new player and wills him to stick around.
and as far as ships, why not have a player based contest? post a thread about it and let people post their ideas for ships? i understand that you dont want scanned pencil/crayon drawings, but limit it to people who know what they are doing on their computer with 3d modeling. i, for one, would love to participate.

Intra-sector navigation would be the best thing to ever happen to VO. In my opinion at least. Right now, a sector is emptiness that goes on forever... which makes it funny when you go up what appears to be an asteroid belt that stops, and starts again next sector.
The problem with ships is not the design so much, but more the implementation of the ships. There's more to it then just building a model. Balancing and such.
