hmm me has no idea. ive always associated it with Nerfs from Star Wars, which r basically the SW equivilant of cows, except dumber and weaker. so to me its always made sense because a Nerf is basically crap and u cant do anything with it( although the ones in SW r eaten, made into clothes etc. it works for me...sorta) i bet this isnt where it came from but w/e......me falls asleep at the computer.

Nerf as in the toy, that is correct. As we all know by now (or we SHOUILD know by now), foam darts and rockets cannot hurt us. By saying that a weapon has been nerfed, someone is saying that they're as weak as the yellow foam projectiles we've grown to love from our childhood. Got it?

The term is used in RPG's to a ruling which renders something useless as a weapon. For example:

"The DM nerfed my two-handed fighter."

The origin of the term is the soft foam toy balls (originally American style footballs because regular footballs are too large and hard for small children) and 'weapons' which are sold as toys. The concept is simply that the new rules made the weapon as 'soft' as a nerf and therefore pointless as a real weapon.

Yes, the term is somewhat overused.

AH! I get it now. Thanks. But I personally like 'caulked', a term i picked up from some SciFi novels. Just has a nice sound to it.
