With new turrets in effect, flying to a major faction is almost impossible, giving traders no resistance to trade. The topic of NPC Pirates arose in a conversation on 100, and i asked myself, wouldn't that totally eliminate PvP unless it was organized or consentual? There are guilds, VPR for example, who's sole purpose is to fight pirates, that would be another aspect of PvP lost. When i first started VO it always bugged me that i could trade inside Itani space and nothing could stop me from making millions upon millions of dollars. Where is the challenge, i ask, to make this money? If NPC Pirates are implemented, not only will that drastically decrease sparatic PvP, i think the NPC Pirates wouldnt be able to differentiate between Pirate and Trader. I just think VO needs a larger PvP base, not organized by guilds and B8, and definitely a more dangerous environment. I understand that new players should have a right to trade, but why not make it a *little* challenging? if NPC Pirates are implemented, would they be in grey space only? would they ask for money? would they just try too shoot them down? and if they did just shoot them down, they are not really pirates. Do border turrets need to be at EVERY WH inside the faction space? I think the most important thing to a MMO game is player interaction. I really like VO, I would love to see it grow to thousands and thousands of players, but like i said, i think the most important part of a MMO is player interaction. So, i have 2 suggestions:
1.Remove the in-faction border turrets, keep the ones that border grey. it makes sense for a skilled pilot to earn his way into the faction space. not only that, but running from SF is always challenging when pirating, so it is definitely not easy to pirate in Major Factions.
2. Let's not eliminate PvP. the turrets seem to keep players in their respective nations. I have noticed since the implementation of turrets, far less people travel to grey. We need to give traders a challenge to make the ridiculous amount of money (escorts) or ridiculous amount of faction points (bulk proc) when flying through space. And we need to give players a reason to fight, not just because someone is in B8 with them. If you are thinking what about BP/BS, that is limited to certain players...
In all fairness, its not like half of the community is pirates. I think pirates play an important roll in VO. Resistance to free money. An enemy for VPR and other various guilds. A reason to engage PvP for anybody, whether defending yourself or being the attacker. and most importantly, unscheduled, sparatic player interaction.

When was the last time you heard of a pirate riverboat terrorizing the Mississippi River?
In the same way, pirates should never have the power to get a foothold in the middle of nation space. The fact that they have in the past was basically a bug.
Now that said, trade between Arta and Verasi should be almost worthless, credit wise. For any profits, trade needs to go from one nation to another or even into grey.
In other threads, everything I just typed has already been mentioned. Don't worry Mepho, it is coming. One thing at a time. Four men cannot make every worthwhile change overnight. Hell it takes me a weekend to write a decent data structure.

very true, but 3/4ths of the VO universe is mississippi river...
Yes but that is also slated to change :)
There will be a ring of grey space outside of the existing systems.

you mean grey systems in a Major Faction Nation? that is a good idea
I agree with you both boys. Make trade in grey so very lucrative. Then the traders will come through and we will be able to play with other players than the snakes. Even though we kinda like 'em and they kinda like us
My name doesn't start with an 'A' but I'll take a stab at posting anyway.
A Pointsman?
heh, i seen that problem coming, soon as they make nation space safe, piracy dies. Oh well, im sure the extra newbs they retain by driving off all the pirates will make up for it.
No, the devs won't turn their backs on piracy. The noobs will be safer, but there will be other opportunities. Don't you guys read Incarnate's posts? He likes the wild frontier feel of VO and will unveil new possibilities. Drop the pessimism about these necessary changes and get busy suggesting viable new ways to support the things you want to do in VO.
ok, whistler, fair enough. how about the border turrets are destructible? maybe for a time limit or something? Like Azumi said about making trade in grey very lucrative, i agree. as long as we can get players to venture out into space and not "hide" in their respective nations all the time, the player interactivity will sky rocket. that IS what we want, right? and also the "ring of grey systems" is a very good idea. i will wait patiently and see what happens.
could just chop down the payouts of everything in nation space by 50% across the board, that would likley draw people out into grey
how about the border turrets are destructible?
... they are and always have been since they were (re)introduced. You just aren't doing enough damage before you die.

its simply impossible to do enough damage before you die, unless you spam a turret, run out of ammo, refill and return to find your turret respawned. mindless....
if we have to carebear newbies, then we definitely need to encourage grey space excursions for real profit. especially coupled with increased ship prices, if a newbie wants to explore real gameplay, he should be forced to make his venture into grey and begin to learn the meaning of having a wingman
with lucrative trade within national borders, newbies can make a fortune, purchase the best ships and enjoy limited pvp and then retreat within their national boundaries. Encourage people to interact by placing the best trade between greyspace and other nations, since the new turrents actually discourage pvp for pirates, and discourage players from ever leaving their respective carebear nation.

i know MSKanaka, but they respawn insantly, what if we had a 10 min window to get through the turret? or something of that nature. no matter how you look at it, one pilot couldnt do it alone, therefore, more player interaction.
Rejected- so far, that is the most common idea, and i hope the devs work that in soon.

I have no problem hunting in nation space even in the capital sectors. Its simply a matter of being selective about your targets. And since I'm POS everywhere but my home nation, my targets have that much more incentive to pay. Which btw, I made 10 pk's between Serco and UIT space today without one point of faction loss. And as soon as the faction protection drops I will be hunting throughout Itani space as well. And best of all, no one can stop me without taking a major faction hit.
I like that new players have a bit of a safety cushion. Means they will feel safe in other nation space when they get the wanderlust.
Uncle.

BRING BACK THE PIRATES!
Really, the heart of grey space needs to be scarier and harder for a noob like me to get into. If you need some zones for PvP I think you could leave the bordering areas with only a light dollop of NPC pirates.
However I think there could be group player based convoy missions to and from grey space that would be challenging and exciting if there were consistant bad guys around to try to outsmart or outrun.

Related to the outsmarting point, it would be awfully useful if it were possible to select the course of the convoy you're leading. How hard would that be to implement? Could they even learn to follow the convoy's Player?
Retractile, being POS across the board is just fifteen different colours of wrong! You as a pirate should be the hunted and should not cause others to take faction hit to eliminate your pirate hide.
I cannot hide my nature, it took a whole week to become non-hated UIT (yes, I kinda tanked it again...shit happens) and I would have trouble pirating in nation space. However that is beside the point. I only hunt nation space because grey is so boring. The only ships that regularly fly grey is combat ships flying to and from Sedina B-8. Give traders incentive to trade in grey and the pirates will stop hunting newbs. It is SO much more satisfying to pirate "Ecka Estenk" than "IamAnewGuy".
