I must first admit that I have been playing a fair bit of Final Fantasy XII recently, but it did give me an idea:
Items you could buy for a ship that do not have ammo, per say, but instead give your ship a buff of sorts. Perhaps nanites that repair 5 armor points every second. Or a item that would nerf all damage against your ship by 5-10%. Things like this could diversify game-play and add depth to our day in, day out combat.
PS- let me say quickly that, all such 'items' would need to 'make sense' and while FF is great, magic has no place in space.

This is a good idea, and one in keeping with VO's combat model, which rewards twitch-based skill and eschews the 'try and get the highest stats possible lootz 4 teh win' mentality.
Once someone jumps all over it as (i) unbalanced, and/or (ii) a bad idea under VO's twitch skill is what matters system, I'll waste the time to explain why.

TY for your support Lecter!
Yeah, I'm not against this. We've had this idea as well.
I expect this sort of thing to become more prevalent when we move towards splitting damage by type and such. Addons that decrease damage to particular types, with tradeoffs, and so on.

Yeah, neato.
