Character Customization (a suggestion)

Sep 16, 2008 Daare link
In order to help personalize player's experience in VO, I would like to suggest a number of completely optional "Specializations". These are not meant to change gameplay in any significant way but to provide a modicum of customization to a player's character if he or she so chooses. (I haven't included numbers since they would need to be tested and tweaked for balance anyway.)

- These Specializations are completely optional.
- Each character may only pick one Specialization.
- Each Specialization is taught at a different station.
- Specializations are accessed via the Mission interface.
- Awards badge (or something) upon completion which activates Specialization.

This link displays the Specializations in an easy-to-read table:

The first six Specializations listed below provide a way to increases how fast one gains a particular license or overall Faction standing balanced by a decrease in the rate of gain of another. Impact on gameplay should be minimal.

Specialization: Boomer
Description: Walk softly and carry a big fraking gun.
Benefit: +Heavy
Cost: -Light
Faction: Axia
Station: Arta Caelistis L-2

Specialization: Diplomat
Description: You're too pretty to get your hands dirty.
Benefit: +Faction
Cost: -Mining
Faction: UIT
Station: Dau L-11

Specialization: Duelist
Description: The right tool for the job isn't always a hammer.
Benefit: +Light
Cost: -Heavy
Faction: Orion
Station: Azek M-4

Specialization: Mercenary
Description: Your deadly reputation precedes you.
Benefit: +Combat
Cost: -Faction
Faction: Corvus
Station: Bractus D-9

Specialization: Miner
Description: You give rocks names - 'nuff said.
Benefit: +Mining
Cost: -Trade
Faction: Valent
Station: Verasi E-14

Specialization: Trader
Description: Buy low, sell high.
Benefit: +Trade
Cost: -Combat
Faction: TPG
Station: Latos N-15

This one might appeal to pirates who want to maximize how much they get from their booty.

Specialization: Pirate
Description: Yarr!
Benefit: +Sell
Cost: -Buy
Faction: Corvus
Station: Odia M-14

The five Specializations below have to do with actual ship stats which would affect gameplay and would therefore be harder to balance but I've included them as an example of possible directions Specializations could take.

Specialization: Scout
Description: Can't hit what you can't catch.
Benefit: +Speed
Cost: -Armor
Faction: Xang Xi
Station: Sedina K-13

Specialization: Tank
Description: Heavy metal.
Benefit: +Armor
Cost: -Speed
Faction: Tunguska
Station: Edras G-11

Specialization: Engineer
Description: That's a mighty big engine.
Benefit: +Turbo
Cost: -Cargo
Faction: BioCom
Station: Nyrius F-6

Specialization: Stevedore
Description: You really know your stuffs.
Benefit: +Cargo
Cost: -Thrust
Faction: Aeolus
Station: Helios B-14

Specialization: Technician
Description: Energy hog.
Benefit: +Thrust
Cost: -Turbo
Faction: Ineubis
Station: Pelatus O-15

Given the number of substantive changes in the works as indicated in the recent News, I don't expect this to get a very high priority but I'm posting it now just to solicit comments. Feel free to suggest other Specializations, different names for the ones listed, or better descriptions. Have fun.

Its a cool idea. Makes the game more like an actual MMO. We all have our chosen professions in game, so it makes sense that we'd pick up a trick or two that help with them.

There should be some type of skills that we pick up. As it stands...(PvPers aside)...everything we do is basically controlled by the equipment or ships that we have.

apart from the fact that I still mean that all flying, combat etc absolutely needs to be twitch and thus free form strange other not named space sim type modifiers I think it would be cool.\

However, the ships modifiers as based on character needs to be kicked. Leave that to some other point and click system.

Wait, you actually expect this to get any priority at all, even if it's not very high?

I'm going with Whytee here. The ship-modifiers need to go.

However, in terms of gaining experience in one field at the expense of another based on a specializations, you may be on to something. Just axe the idea of a few preset professions; the player should have full freedom to choose what to boost and what to sacrifice.

And keep the pirate one. I loathe pirates, but I'll admit that that one is pretty neat.

Can I multi-class my level 12 duelist with a single level of boomer class to obtain the heavy gun feat? Or do I need to complete the Sword of Omens quest first?
