an idea (laser weapons)

Sep 15, 2008 xXxDSMer link
i was thinking tonight, and remembering what i would like to see most in the game that is not already in it. i found the first post about looking to see if something has been suggested or not, and read for at least an hour to see if it had been suggested before and found nothing other than what i thought was a silly ram weapon of a very short laser weapon. anywho, on to the idea (wether its been posted before or not lol)

i recently started using the basic rail and i like that it can reach out to 1000-1100 meters and touch somethin.

what i would like to see in VO is a laser blaster (small port) and laser cannon (large port) here's the text i typed up when i actually sat and thought about it...

---------------------------------------------------------------
how about just a simple laser beam weapon that shoots, either a quick beam at a time, or you can turn it on and keep it on till the battery drains, and have it be the same range as a railgun or any of the regular weapons that we already have. (i would prefer long range like the rail, and there could be different models for either high dmg burst fire, or lower damage steady beam - as long as you hold the button it makes a beam, until the battery runs out of course)

i would like to see just a simple laser weapon as another option to go with all the neutron, positron, and plasma (blasters or cannons) and the gauss cannons that we already have, and its not just a variant of something that already exists, its something new :)

i have recently started using the basic rail some, and i would really love to see another long range weapon. a laser weapon. (perhaps a laser blaster for small port and a laser cannon for a large port variant)
---------------------------------------------------------

as i mentioned, i would like to see another option for long range weaponry, and maybe models of this new to vo technology could be shorter range sort of blaster type (fires a shot per click) or the steady beam, but either way, i would like to see laser weapons, small and large, and i like long range gunning :)

havent figured out any specs for it, i'm just ready to play the game after all that reading of the forums lol. my eyes are hurtin, and i want more combat license points, so i'm off to the game.

YEAH THAT SOUNDS GREAT... no. I'm pretty sure this has been discussed before.

and that was a post started about some 50m range very short and close combat weapon, and that is what more than 98% (guessing, i didnt actaully count the posts) of the discussion is about. very short range beam weapons. as you seen when you read my post (if you read all of it) i am suggesting ranged laser weapons, preferably with long range, and possibly medium and long range models of it. not close 50 meter stuff. attention to detail fellers (or ladies) :-)

I included the link because you referenced it.

I guess you really "schooled" me there.

Hehe, Whistler.

However, long-range pinpoint weapons will be subject to the whole "quantized rotation" thing, where you cannot have full control of your rotation vector. Due to game mechanics, your nose kind of "snaps-to" a set of points. Try zooming in on an asteroid with a long-range weapon, like HX blasters. shoot it, then imperceptibly rotate and shoot again. You'll find that you move more than you think, and that, unless you strafe, you will be unable to hit anything between those two points.

I think Martin or Miharu may have a better explanation for this phenomenon, but it is a built-in game mechanic, and it will not be changed soon, I think.

That's why long-range weapons suck in this game. Plus, hitting anything at over 1000m is impossible. Hell, hitting anything at 500m is very tough, try it.

The only time something like this would be useful is if both you and your target were sitting still and he/she was unaware of your presence. Then you might get in a few hits before the maneuvering started, and this weapon became useless.

So, I like the idea (cause I love sniping), but due to game mechanics it might never be implemented. Plus, it's hard to sneak up on anyone in this game. You KNOW who is in the sector with you, you see their radar sig at 3000m, and most people have a prox alarm set to 1000m. Before we could have good sniper weapons, we'd need concealment. Like radar jammers, radar occlusion by asteroids, etc.

Beam weapons are banned because they are instantaneous, what if the laser wasn't - it bends when you turn the nose of you ship, similar to chainfiring and turning, you get ribbons of fire.

well, we have the rail with a range of 1100m (or close to it)...

and we have the plasma cannon HX that either gets out to 900m or close to it (but with a very junky 160 meters per second velocity)

there's two long range weapons we have (despite one's extreme energy use and the other's nearly extreme slow velocity)... if long range weapons were completely useless, they wouldnt be in the game would they? :)

i can see what some have said about long range beam weapons, but i'm thinkin lasers (that arent just mining beams lol) is somethin this game is missing.

maybe a possible alternate idea for something else long range (900-1100m effective range)... perhaps a "variant" (yeah.. the dreaded variant word lol, although i like the gauss mk3 hehe) of something that already exists, that has longer range?

There's plenty of useless crap in the game that's just been around for 5 years and never modified. Ask about hydrospanners.

You have to, I think, re-read my initial post, and then try to use the HX to hit stuff at long-range. Hold down the "i" key to stay zoomed in as you fire, you'll notice that your firing vector is not completely accurate, "snapping-to" a set of coordinates.

Not that I'm against long-range weapons, it's just that there's no good use for them. People use rails as weapons at around 100-250m, solely because of their extreme damage potential.

rails because of their extreme damage potential? i doubt it.

maybe because of their 400 meter / second velocity, but not because of how fast they do damage.

if i'm remembering correctly rails only fire every like 1 to 1.7 seconds, and have a best damage of 2400.

neuts do high 3000 to low 4000 damage per second. lol

You cannot use dps attributes in a pvp situation that involves highly mobile craft, assuming the pilots are of at least approximately similar skill levels. You won't get in a stream of neut fire that lasts longer than a few shots.

As such, rails do have an extreme damage potential.

Hrm, yes, xXxDSMer I don't think you've played this game quite enough if you're trying to figure out dps. You can't min/max your way into a winning solution in Vendetta-Online.

Unline in EvE or other worthless "click on the other guy until someone wins" MMORPG's, in Vendetta you have to HIT your opponent. I can have the best goddamn weapon in the galaxy, but if my aim is shit, it doesn't matter how much damage my maxxkill-uber-slayer-lazZzor does.

I've been handily and embarrassingly defeated by a vet in a Rev C with twin TPG sparrows whilst I was in a Tunguska Aggresso Centaur with twin gatling turrets and gauss. I've also defeated quadflare hornets, quadrail hornets, and quad neut hornets rather easily in a simple Vulture Mk. III with Neuts. It goes both ways.

I'm trying hard not to sound condescending, but I realize that that might be a futile effort. You should play the game more, try to kill some other players, and you will soon realize your folly.
