Mentors, the Freshmakers!

I have tried to genuinely mentor people, but they have never been able to do the command. All of those times were legit, except for when I was on my itani char, where I showed them how to backroll then did a couple bp missions with them(I died more times than them in those missions, bots can't hit backrolling ibgs).

I agree there should ESPECIALLY NOW be implemented a way to have mentors visible and available as soon as a new character comes on. Limiting mentoring to two levels when the tutorials alone can easily get the character to a second level of something makes mentoring useless and, therefore, the items linked to mentoring a prize not worth going after since it is so difficult to get.

One of the following things need to be done:

1) Only have tutorials available if there is nobody available on the Mentor list, then have a Mentor list available (faction based) for a person to point and click on to work with. Should be as simple as that.

2) Get rid of the tutorials entirely and have the Mentor list established.

3) Have both tutorials and the Mentor list available, but make the very first tutorial when you come in immediately jump at the end to the mentor list establishing that while there are tutorials a mentor should be looked for first.

Mentor List Guiidelines: Anyone with 3 negative mentor ratings should be disallowed from continuing to stay on the list. Only those who voluntarily put themselves on the list will be available for mentoring, not everyone online. A person in a group or mentoring already will be temporarily removed from the list until they are out of that mentorship or group.

I agree, mentoring really helps out in the beginning. I remember Smittens mentored me way back and it was great.
Maybe raising the lvl from 2 to say 4 or 5 would help the situation. Many people want to be mentored in pvp that have finished some basic combat missions and are lvl 4 or 5.

Bump? Adding some "looking for mentor" interface (like suggested in parts 1&2 of the first post) would be very good.

Currently the only way of getting these points is either ask players to ask you to become their mentor (which sounds stupid even when we don't mention that this can be done by spamming 100 and giving money for positive mentor points) or just create 40/3 trial accounts and be done with mentor points grind.

I usually try to help any new player who asks for it, but not for the sake of getting these points. I just don't bother asking to /mentor invite me

MSKanaka said: I personally hung around in capitol systems helping new players. I didn't do any of that mentor-point grinding you speak of.

I appreciate that you help new players. But that looks a bit different from my standpoint. I spend most of my time in grey fighting pirates (on my VPR character) or in Deneb fighting Serco (on my Itani char) or again in grey CtCing. So, I am combatant, and I am one of those who actually need the UC batt. And who do I get them from? From someone who safely traded in a capitol system! UC is a combat equipment, why is it earned from safe non-combat activity?

Probably not having to do with anything mentioned in this thread... but I figured I'd give my 2 cents here.

I think the mentor system is a sham. Not because it doesn't 'work', but because of the idea behind it. The idea is that if you 'mentor' someone (i.e. help them out for a bit) you have the chance of getting 'mentorship points'. The problem I have with this is simple: What about the many players in VO who help just for the sake of helping?

I've helped lots of players myself, from long questions, to short questions. I've done so just to help a fellow VO player along and I've been helped myself by other players thinking the same thing. So why should other players who have asked to become a "mentor" get points and thus special equipment?

I have to agree with MythOpus. Not in so much as its a sham but, in that many people just help out to be nice. I've seen in chat a great many pilots answering all manner of questions for the influx of newblets we have recently gotten. Theres an number of guilds where members will help new pilots out of the goodness of thier hearts, I've even seen help come from unlikely sources like CLM and other known pirates. I usually help new players just out of boredom.

Mentoring though a good idea does not really need a system with rewards.

well, here's the thing. when we answer questions in 100, they are simple answers, but there is a whole world to dive into when it comes to VO. When it comes to TRAINING a person, thats a different story than answering questions in 100. A good mentor will mentor his protege for weeks. help him level up. train him to fight. teach him all the commands involved with vo (aliases-binds-plugins-etc) point him in the right direction with a guild. give him money. give him ultracell batteries. in other words, a good mentor will give up his time and plans for a certain length of time to help a new player. This, imo, should definitely be rewarded. i was flying in Latos yesterday, and i overheard a convo of a lvl 3 pilot mentoring a lvl1 pilot. wtf?! the mentor system needs to be advertised, bold, and available to higher lvl players, i would imagine lvl10+. dont underestimate the power of a mentor. if you ask around, some of the great pilots were mentored by the 1st generation pilots.

I understand what your saying but, even the in depth stuff goes on with out the mentoring. One of the things that makes the VO "community" unique in the world of MMOs is that it is a true community in the sense that the people are very helpful. When I was a wee little newblet there were a good many people who sacraficed time and plans to teach me the best roid fields to mine, the best trade routes, the basics and more complex parts of combat and all with out the mentoring system being used. I in turn...(like many players)...take the time to do this for new players. Example, the other day I was mining Heliocene ore, I saw a pilot mining a Ferric roid, explained to him the difference between Heliocene and Ferric, invited him to mine my roid and showed him the best stations to sell the ore. It turns out he was most interested in mining/trade so I told him about the various plugins and how to install them, gave him pointers...(which I learned from Jas)...on better and more effiecent ways to build faction standing and do bulk procs...etc...etc...

My point is that mentoring takes place all the time, from simple stuff like on 100 to the very in depth stuff without the mentoring system being used. Its good to encourage us older pilots to help the newer ones but it is unnecessary in most cases. I think its be better to just help the newblets be able to acheive thier goals and not be bribed to.

Still waiting for a word from devs ... the whole system has to be reworked. Maybe it required reasonable effort to collect 40 points in the old days of VO but it is almost impossible nowadays. Hey, some of us would like to be able to buy UCs, too.
