Could I have a little mass with that please?

Just a small thought, probably been suggested before as I think it's pretty obvious.

Why not give cargo mass? And not just based on the merit of more expensive = higher mass. Just think how this would benefit both a pirate and a trader.

For example: A ore heavy trader could observe a notorious pirate entering their sector, several options are open to the trader. Try and run at best speed towards their next gate. Stop and fight fully laden and less manouverable than normal. Ditch their cargo and run. Ditch their cargo and fight (which opens up another nice possibility). In general it opens up alot more choices than a simple blow up people take cargo for pirates, it also gives the trader alot more choices in how to tackle the situation, it will be making things trickier for them. Not to say that's a bad thing, I find trade runs tedious for the most part, but maybe that's just me.

One of the possibilities this opens up is for the pirate to grab cargo if a ship has ditched it's load to fight and quickly make off with it's loot, pretty much non-hostile for both parties. This will promote escorts or convoys due to the safety in numbers, pirates heavy with loot will have a harder time making it to a station safely so in some respects it will become more difficult for both parties.

Anyway, once again, bleh!

It takes more coding than you'd think to pull this idea off...no need to mention it again - the devs know and are planning on it. They just have a lot of coding to do to pull it off.

This is the suggestions forum, I thought the idea would be to throw ideas around and discuss their effects on gameplay, not discuss how difficult feature 'x' would be to code. If you have something to say could you please keep it relevant to the subject.

beady: Well, while tossing around ideas is fun, useful ideas are ones which can be implemented. How realistic an idea and how much work it requires (if it isn't already in the feature set) is is definately relevant to the subject.

That said, by all accounts, the devs plan to implement something very much like what you suggest. I think all Freeman was saying was that you should be patient.

If you are going to get snippy whenever someone replies to your suggestion in less than a full endorsement, please don't bother making suggestions at all.

As for how it effects gameplay, in my opinion if cargo mass is a significant portion of ship mass it will very negatively effect gameplay, with the result of unloaded freighters either being the best fighters or else loaded freighters being far too vulnerable. Generally speaking, so called 'pirates' are only interested in improving thier PK total, not in taking cargo. This may change as the economy moves from a freely testing mode to a RPG mode, but it will never completely change.

Celebrim - I agree that currently the majority of pirates are only interested in increasing their number of PKs, however as you said, when the game progresses past the current test stage that may change. I can see people choosing to pirate because of the challenge and rewards in that career, certainly there will still be players who wish to PK but that is always the case, that doesn't make them pirates - regardless your point is still valid, hopefully traders will be in a position to defend themselves reasonably.

Playtesting and balancing would prevent transports from becoming uberfighters when unloaded, their hulls simply wouldn't be made to take the types of stress and strains which a fighter hull would be in day to day use. The nature of it would be that craft being shoehorned into a role (fighter as a freighter) would perform far worse than a craft made specifically for that purpose.

Regarding being 'snippy' my apologies that I came over that way, indeed reading it back my post is a bit overly blunt. But I'm far more interesting in peoples opinions of how this could effect gameplay, situations which they could see as arising thought the effects of this suggestion and any ways flesh it out. I didn't notice a post about it in the top two pages, I'll make sure I dig deeper next time before posting a new topic on a subject already made, or proposal already covered.

Sorry Cmdr. Freeman.
