MC, regardless of whether or not it's a nice model, or if there may or may not be wiggle room in the copyright laws, try to look at it from a business point of view: the money/time saved from using a someone else's work would never cover the eventual cost of litigation if the owners of the original design decided to argue their copyright was infringed.
It would be cheaper to hire/buy new art and put it ingame, and I don't doubt the devs will think about these things once they've reached that point in Their Plans.

Besides, there's more to putting a ship in VO than just making a single 3D model: There's also the collision mesh, the physics model, and separate texturing skins for every level of quality. The devs are kind of busy, and training an intern to do this sort of stuff takes a lot of work too.
Even if it was completely original, the point is moot: Its not gonna happen.

Hey, vIsitor, you clearly don't know what you're talking about.
I mean, MC1171611 can almost guarantee that the devs could use an .obj more simply than you think... what more is there to say?!
MC1171611: Copyright Lawyer Extraordinaire, AND Master of VO Ship Programming.

Well, since Lecter is a dev in disguise, he could probably tell you more than I can. Of course anyone with two brain cells to rub together knows it's easier to make a complete ship from scratch than to take an .obj file and texture it, add acceleration animation, physics modeling and all that stuff.
After all, "from scratch" has fewer words than "take an .obj file and texture it, add acceleration animation, physics modeling and all that stuff." Therefore it must be easier.

Crap I'm confused now... does that mean this entire thread is sarcasm?!

Yes, it all comes together now.
He's wounded and losing, so he grabs for the broken spearhead.
Lecter is the legal expert here. So you lose on legal grounds.
And the Devs have said repeatedly they cannot use player models because it requires MORE work than doing it themselves to make everything work.

Wow, and I thought Lecter was a troll!!

Lawyers are frequently both, Gav.

Try as he might, MSKanaka could not stop dreaming of Leonardo DiCaprio.
Can someone please, please delete this post and lock the thread? There's pretty much no better way to end this than Gavan's last post.
Armchair lawyers (Lecter mostly), gotta hate them.
Blacknet, his profession happens to be lawyering. So eat your hat.

I think you're talking about someone else, Gavan -- I'd never ever watch a movie with DiCaprio in it, much less that crapshoot that was the Titanic movie.
