Now, is it just my screen, or are rail gun shots really hard to see? This wouldn't be a problem, except in twitch based combat I have this little problem of needing to see the weapon spread to strafe away. Now I know shape, leebs, and the rest of you combat vets already use esp to dodge, but some of us aren't so skilled. Plus when my health tanks, and I can't see the tiny blue streak ripping up my hull, it rather ruins a good fight, except to my aggressor using the rails, who probably feels very big in his pants.
Anyway, in short, i suggest a new shot graphic for rails, something distinguishable such as the blue and green shots of neuts and posis.

Big flaming red darts o' doom!
No. It's a sniper gun that isn't even a very good sniper gun (In terms of, oh, sniping)
Making railgun shots more visible will do nothing, because of the reasons discussed in these four posts. (Smittens, mine, tumble's, and then Smittens again.)
When a railgun is fired, there's very little (read: almost nothing) that you can do to prevent it hitting you unless it was not going to hit you in the first place.

But but... big flaming red darts
You can't do anything about it after it was fired, regardless. The times that you need to worry about are before and right when it is fired. The idea is to throw their aim off. The railgun in fact does have autoaim, but whether the shooter uses it or not (option to turn AA on/off on any weapon) is up to them. If it is on then even doing a quick roll while predicting when they fire will throw it off just enough. Again, *nothing* can be done after it is fired, doesn't mean it will hit you but at that point your at the whim of their aiming ability and it does take some aiming ability in 1 on 1 fighting if the target knows even moderately how to strafe. The idea is to make sure the shooter doesn't get the chance to hit you, it's all anticipating their firing times and where and when they are more comfortable to hit you. I can't say much more, as I am strictly a guild trainer. Again though, don't think dodge after they fire but right before, almost simultaneously as they fire.
And uh, changing the color won't help haha, thing could look like a hippo and you'll still be dead...

well actually thats not true at all light fighters can dodge rail shots without any problems at 250 meters and heavy ships usually dont need to worry since the auto aim system makes them miss anytime your more than 500 meters out.

HIPPOS!
Part of the great thing about rails is that they are hard to see, in addition to being awfully fucking fast. If you make them easier to see, you make them easier to dodge. And rails don't need that sort of nerf.
FYI, though, it helps if you turn off all the background, so that space is entirely black. I find it much easier to see what's important to me against that backdrop.

if it was up to me i would buff the rails.

Spidey, you're not getting anywhere near my rail, much less buffing it.

Spidey you're wrong, I've made rail kills at 1000 meters.
Spidey never has been too good at turning off his AA.
Hm, rail kills at 1000 meters eh? http://www.vendetta-online.com/x/msgboard/7/9241#107002
's been a while, but rails can be fun.

I say add or change the graphics of rails to add more graphical effect. Since most of the experienced combat pilots say it doesn't matter once they are fired. Well I say if I get boomed by quadrails from 1000m away I want to see something beautiful.
Why do you need to see rails? The sound is distinct enough.
Too do something with them for a change?
It's only cosmetics.

On the subject of Railguns, how about giving them to bots? Currently, I believe, the AI doesn't use them because they either A) aren't smart enough to handle them or B) are too effective with them.
The former is a coding issue more than anything else, but the latter could just as well be compensated for by given the railguns which the Bots use a slight measure of inherent inaccuracy.
Thoughts?
