Okay, I've searched on various phrases relating to music and songs but haven't seen this exact proposal in the archives. My apologies if it's already been suggested and discussed.

Similar to the player-created custom skins that make this game look better, I'd like to hear player-created custom background music. I know about the existing plugins that control various media players, but that's not quite what I'm talking about. I'm talking about replacing the original ingame music with songs of your choice, so that flying into a bot-infested sector automatically cues your favorite fighting music; or flying through empty sectors cues your favorite traveling music. I'm not certain how many different songs the game plays in various situations, but it would be great to add some variety.

I imagine a music pack based on Star Wars or other movie soundtracks; another using various mellow ambient and electronica songs; another mixing some good ol' rock 'n roll. Sky's the limit. Go nuts.

My ignorance of Lua or whatever else might be needed to accomplish this is absolute. Is it possible? If not, what can be done to make it possible?

Well, you could certainly make a plugin to look for some events/situations and play music accordingly.
