Hit sound, improve
Congratulations on this fun and elegantly simple game. After my first 8 hours the following stands out in my mind for needing a fix:
Could you find a more pleasant sound file for when my shots hit the enemy ship? On my Mac client, using some kind of small plasma or ion weapon, when I hit the enemy I hear a "beep" sound. This is easily distinguished from the other combat sounds, but it sounds very negative, like some kind of system error. It would be nice if you could find a sound that is still distinct but sounds more positive and satisfying.

I dunno, after playing Vendetta for almost 4 years now, when I do things like go skeet shooting or even just playing basketball, I mentally insert the "boop" when I hit/make basket/whatever.
Yeah, I know it's odd.
Don't take away the BOOP!

the hit sound is fine as it is...
you just need to get used to it, you've only played for 8 hours.

The boop does have some nostalgia value, since it sounds exactly like all those old Atari games. Hell, if my aging memory cells are accurate that boop may be the same as Pong.
It's functional, and the old guard will resist any suggestion of change, but the boop could stand some improvement.

If I had the option I would probably turn it off.
I've said it before, and now I'll say it again: I want the "hit" sound to be the one used in C&C Renegade multi-player. That doink was perfect! I have eargasms just thinking about it.
It would be an extremely low priority, but perhaps eventually thee could be sound options, like different collections of sounds to choose from. (sorry I can't think of the right words tonight)
I think the current sound is fine. It ain't broke. It never, ever occurred to me to confuse it with a mac error sound, and I have been using macs for some time now (the *Bing* sound you might be referring to is more drawn-out and bingy-like, unlike VO's, which is more boopy).
Bots are hit with a much greater frequency than players. In addition to being able to toggle it off, another great option would be to have the hit tone sound only for PvP.
Also: what about having the hit tone sound only once per unit time or damage interval?

It already does this, but the time interval is rather low.

The main problem of the hit sound is it sound like a system beep too much. And it's too different compared to other sound effect in the game.
Isn't this just a leftover from early development days, when it was used for debug purposes (to know when a hit scored and when it didn't)?
Well it's to be sure you hit, but it has nothing to do with debug.
It's quite useful in a fight, for me at least, tho a toggle wouldn't hurt.

I think the more you'll play the more you'll get used to it and appreciate it. I think kinda what Leber was trying to say is that you come to love the sound, as it's the signal of being successful. At the very least devs, if you're gonna change anything about it (time interval, sound, whatever) please make it optional.
abinitio asked, "Could you find a more pleasant sound file for when my shots hit the enemy ship?"

Ouch. Seriously.
