Whats the deal with resurrecting old threads and infusing them with new strife?
If you want the size of stations to reflect what it's capable of, then current stations really need to grow in size. Currently, it's a bit like a magician's trick when dozens of Behemoths undock from a small station.
If PCs can build stations, then maybe they should be modular, so they grow over time by adding blocks, rather than being replaced as a whole. A block could initially appear as wireframe (girders etc), gradually being filled in as it is completed.
However, all this is complex, and no doubt a long way off. It may be better to think of partial ownership of stations by PCs, in that you can rent shop space in a station, which appears to visitors like another Commodities tab. Instead of buying/selling to the station directly, visitors can buy/sell to a shop.
Given the number of people harking their wares on 100 recently, there does seem to be a real desire for player owned shops in VO.
Possibly those with property on a station can fund larger/better strike forces, or purchase turrets to be deployed near the station, to help defend the place (though I like the idea of turrets *on* the station, which actually have gun barrels which track you as you come in to dock if you don't have high standing). Well defended routes will have more traders, leading to larger profits (in theory).
This would be (I would think) much easier to implement and have smaller effect on the game, whilst allowing the groundwork for full ownership to be put in place and tested. No doubt it's been mentioned before however.

Uh, Whistler, you spend all this time directing new player to the existing threads... you HAD to believe that some of them would actually TAKE that advice.
The resurrection is fine, it's the renewed frustration and angst that confuses me.
the slow pace of change crushes dreams.
However Guild owned stations would be kick ass.
It would give people more incentive to explore as well.
We would need NPC Convoys to deliver to these stations, and if players want to deliver as well, then they can..
This would and could bring in a new "guild standing" where say, a freelance itani could dock in the [Itan] Station and deliver items to raise their standing with that guild.
However a Serco could not raise their standing with [Itan] becuase of Warring status.
You would also need station guards.

This seems like a good idea. Having PC owned stations act in the capacity of guilds and taking on traditional npc responsibilities puts the story in the lap of the PC's and could take some of the drugdery off the dev's. Personally I don't think player bought stations should be destructible but mearly raidable. If you wanted to make stations capturable then there might needs be a restructuring of the system map. What could be done is having the three nations form a relative triangle with grey space in the center. Stations farther in a nation's space are larger and more easily defended, stations towards the center are smaller respectively and more disputable. Capitols are nigh impregnable. Each nation will have a particular resource they are rich in. To get others needed for the production of goods, ships or weopons they either must trade or fight for them. Pirates would inhabit grey space and essentially form a nation of thier own only with different agendas. War would be fought by scale. The further out you expand the harder it is to hang on to your gains. Stations extending into other's nation space that are conquered will have too long a supply chain for the capturing nation to hold it for long. This would insure ongoing tension and add gravity to trade runs, war and pirating while balancing the nations(they would actually be happening for a reason). Of course, the known 'verse would need to be expanded to make room for all this. I would suggest almost a triforce look. A triangle inside a triangle, marking off nation space with grey in the center.
I added some evolving on this idea here:

In few words, Stations could be BUILT and mantained, in a multi-player coordinated effort. Build must have Dev's approval. Stations are modular. Many new missions possible then.
Old-time hardcore ppls can have something challenging to do...
