If the player is in the wrong place at the wrong time, the risk is the same....but accidents would be prevented if there are no enemies around......

when fights are going on, EVERYONE is susceptible to splash, therefore risk is the same.

Clearly, it seems that you don't understand that risk and accidents are not the same thing.

Wait, wait, wait...

but accidents would be prevented if there are no enemies around

You want to put this feature in because . . . someone's finger might slip in a non-combat situation.

I must, scarily enough, echo genka here: Holy christ, are you for real?

Sorry sfriedenberg, Lecter is right. You are wrong.

Ah, I see where you're coming from, and I must apologize for not stating this clearly. I didn't mean when there are no enemies in the sector, I meant when there are no enemies in close proximity.

This would be most useful for lmines - scenario - lmines at the wh in b-8 and a guildmate jumps in....the guildmate isn't destroyed...a couple seconds later an enemy jumps ....the enemy is destroyed......The whole idea is to selectively destroy people and not just everyone.

I'm sorry that you thought that I meant to prevent 'someone's finger slipping' scenarios. Not my intention at all. That would be outright ridiculous to have the devs waste their time on 'selective detonation' if this was its purpose.

If L-mines (and not their explosive splash, just their arcing) are all this applies to, I'm fine with it.

Otherwise, it's an annoyance, it's bad for the combat model, and it's a waste of time.

Just do away with FF all together, No magic shields for anyone IS more realistic that a few magic shields for some!

Actually, I think L-mines should be able to discern between friend and foe. The problem however, is that it is difficult to say and define who exactly is a friend and who isn't. So while I agree with Lecter, it is probably easier to just do away with it entirely.

Why do people keep incessantly describing the idea of 'selective detonation' as a protective shield?

ITS NOT. The idea is that explosive weapons (flares, rockets, swarms, mines) will only detonate when a defined enemy is within radius. Entirely ignoring non-enemies. However, when the weapon is detonated, ANYTHING within the splash radius is damaged, not just the enemy. Its not a magic shield.

that still would likely be problematic to implement, i guess you could have three modes for the mines;

HOT, shoots anything cept yourself.

Guild safe, doesn't shoot guild members.

Group safe, doesn't shoot group members (this would be useful for nation wars).

I guess you could have a faction safe option too, same idea as above.

I'd not like to see this added to flares, their already good enough, but mines would kinda make sence.

If so (as lnh specified), then not exclusive, but applicable in any combination.

Having never used mines, I cannot comment to any degree of accuracy on the useage of mines.

I will point out that "smart" mines(speaking in a literal, real-world sense) would be consistently baffled by both sides using the same spaceframes.

Personally, I've always found IFF transponders to be tactically suspect. The last thing I'd want on my bird while operating in listen-only would be a box that goes "Why hello thar! Here is my triangulable signal!" I can suppose that VO operates a rather sophisticated IFF system that is more like a declaration device. "Hi! I fly with these guys." From there, your computer decides if your standing with those guys warrants that particular contact being a bandit or not. Which is fine in space - spacecraft produce so much IR radiation that stealth is a funny concept in anything but pure power-down ballistic flight.

This is a game, however...
