Ship name on exterior of vessel
I think it would be awesome if you could put the name of your character on the side of your ship. And in your choice color.

I totally agree with this and will use all of my power to make this suggestion a real thing. Even though my power is currently, and will always be nothing. DAMN!
Only if it's five letters or less
Oooh...not to hijack, but I had a thought on this as well.
If they're in a guild, display their guild tag, and if they're not in a guild, show the first 6 or 7 letters. Then, when you get within something like 45 degrees of looking at them, it displays their full name and guild tag (if applicable) in the person's nation color.

This might be a little difficult to do. Baking in yet another texture (this one dynamically generated) would both be hard, and would (I believe) noticeably degrade performance.

Well, true...I'm just used to things like Battlefield 2142 where you know who everyone is without needing to target them. Although targetls helps a lot.
You know somethings just does not work out so well.
I have to agree with Roguelazer. I've long thought that the ability to name a ship or otherwise denote ownership without locking onto a ship would be excellent.
I think a more, HUD friendly variant might be do-able. Something like all Allied/Group ships in front of you would display their allied tags on your forward HUD (except NPCs), Hostiles would be denoted by red X's or "Hostile" notations, and Neutral would be noted as Yellow Box's
This should of course be able to be turned off readily so that pilots can have a clear forward display. In the event the system is off, the HUD would revert to it's current style, where ships can be locked and displayed.
How about that?

er... by the time you're close enough to read it, you 'asploded' anyhow.
I think the idea would work perfictly, besides the work. but i was thinking to lighten the load you could make it something like you designate the place of where to put it and the player them self would be able to imput the text. like a forum avatar.
but something to think about, some ppl i thnik would try to be childesh and put something on their ship. not saying that is WILL happen but it might. the only way i think that you could stop that is ether to have a program that scans for certain things, or have a game staff check ALL of the ingoing images- again, alot of work.
