Perishable goods as overstocking solution

May 15, 2008 upper case link
there are to be, at some point, some station cargo limits/quotas to be imposed as means to control stockpile abuse.

until the economy fixes, money is still a problem: there's no cash sinkholes yet. there's been a discussion on having station storage costs or above-quota taxes etc but until all that is implemented, both the stockpiling and abundance of cash issues remain.

as a mean to control both issues, i'm suggesting the use of Shelf life.

aka, Shelf life is the time that products can be stored, during which the defined quality of a specified proportion of the goods remains acceptable under expected conditions of distribution, storage and display.

this can apply to *everything*. from sedina chocolate to neut mk3.

"but, but, how can a neut3 go bad after a week or two??
-they just dont make 'em as they used to."

there's your answer. cheap materials. whatever.

if you have items in your station cargo hold that's beyond their shelf life, either it's thrown away (food/medical items?) or can be refurbished (or repackaged) for a nominal fee.

incompatible software upgrade...

retarded

just get the devs to finally implement cargo limits

that is all

Having a shelf-life of like 2 years on a Neut Mk 3 might be feasible, but nothing like 2 months. Maybe sedina chocolates could go bad after 2 weeks, of course tequila would never go bad since it's already as bad as it's going to get.

Do that AND implement cargo limits.

AND charge rent for all items stored by the cubic meter.

Huh? There are already cargo limits. You can have a maximum of 200,000 cu per station.

I know a good excuse for Neut 3's going bad: The radioactive core used to generate the free neutrons probably has a short half-life. After awhile, there wouldn't be enough left to effectively use, rendering the weapon useless.

charming to the last, doc.

but the suggestion is two-fold:

station limits dont solve the stockpiling issue because you can always stockpile at multiple stations. on the other hand, if items go bad/stale/rust/deplete (/whatever) after a while, then it becomes harder to manage huge stockpile because you run the risk of loosing some if you dont liquidate.

secundo, it's a money sink. if you insist on keeping stockpiles, or even just a few but leave them rotting in a station, you end up loosing that investment or have to re-invest to recondition said stockpiles.

when i tentatively came back, i realized i had huge amounts of just about anything in a bunch of stations. if i remember right, i had a couple thousand heliocene in verasy somewhere, ships all over the place (one alt had about 100 stored pre-nerf valks in edras).

i think rotting ships should require maintenant before heading back out.

It would be extremely lame for rare items to go poof because you left them at a station for a little while.

Interesting suggestion, although I wouldn't even try to explain it. Just do it.

Every single MMO game I know has limited Inventory and Stash space. Why not VO? People won't ask why. They'll accept the fact.

New players more so than older ones.

If not items, then maybe just ships. Cuz their 'core' decays or something.
