flight assist backwards
First off, I've only been playing the game for two days. So I apologize if this is incorrect thinking or correct thinking in the incorrect context.
I would really like it if there were a way (maybe there is, but the consensus in game seems to be no) to create momentum going "backwards" in F/A mode.
I'm an FPS player, so F/A is very natural for me, and I can maneuver just about as well in either mode -- but it kills me that I can't simply start moving backwards (relative to the nose of my craft) in certain situations.
Perhaps a keyboard control that doubles as lower throttle/throttle backwards that I could rebind to 's' would be the best. You can use the break either way for return-to-zero, so I don't see it interfering that much with normal throttle control. It would allow all directions of movment without having to leave F/A mode.
Thank you.

Try physics mode.
I appreciate the point, but I don't like physics mode, personally. Maybe there is a way to do this as well, but I severely dislike the ability to either A) see what my speed is along the 3 axis of my relative point-of-view. And, B) can't individually return axises of movement back to zero (the break is necessary, but three individual breaks would be what I would really want here).
I understand.. most people play with physics mode. Maybe if I get into duels and ending up dying all the time, I'll be more interested, for now, I'm doing great in F/A mode.
I've been an FPS player for years, and a lot of what people seem to take advantage of in physics mode is what I would do naturally anyways. The only difference for me is that I have to hold the key down to keep moving in that direction (and no, holding three different keys in combat really isn't a problem for me).
This is just the one serious shortcoming of F/A mode as far as I can tell.. if the ship can move backwards (thrusters are present to create momentum in that relative direction) then why isn't there a way to do it in F/A? From my POV, F/A would be _way better_ if I could just make the ship go "backwards."
The only other thing I would want (but haven't researched) is a "lookspring" kind of thing. It would temporarily decouple my view from the front of my craft.. when I hold the key down, I can look in a different direction without changing the direction of my current momentum (sort of like what happens when you have turbo on in F/A).

heh, this is kinda a 'duh' suggestion.
Totally do it.
