Energizing Return Customers
The best customers you have for VO are return customers. They already know what VO is and often are interested in where it is progressing. I think that every time you make a major addition to the game that substantially enhances the VO experience, you should send an email to all your previous customers. This would be a change from just sending email to the customers who checked the "e-mail notification of updates/events." I initially didn't check that box because I had just signed up and didn't know what VO was about. I also assumed it was permission to sell my e-mail address. I never thought about it afterword.
I later came to understand that the story of Guild software is the adventure if four highschool buddies who built a great MMRPG! In this light I think it is totally appropriate to write an e-mail to us a few times a year describing changes which would draw us back to VO. It could be formatted not as a slick ad, but as a personal note from the game creators.
Perhaps if Guild software does want to honor that check box, then they could ask again at the end of a subscription if we would like e-mail notification of major progress. A great place to do that would be in the dialog that comes up when you log in and your subscription has run out.

Heh, the check box isn't for spam. And also, they should send out emails, they have mentioned that they want to, they've just never found/made the time for it.
Maybe they could get the community to write them? That'd be kinda nifty. Pick a few writers, and set 'em to work.

I'll write a press release.
I've been monitoring the boards for precisely that reason.
in fact, i had returned in january to try out the various additions (and the promise of debilitator* being done for) but in the end, decided to wait some more.
i know for a fact more people actually monitor on an on/off basis for the same reasons. they're waiting for that one thing that they've always wanted.
while guild banking was high on my list (no shit!), it turns out being able to have a fair unlagged bs/bp fight is, too, a priority for me. i just hate the sound of dud ammo on tin cans.
so please, no spam.
*french play of word... i dont care if you didn't, but i laughed...

I always laugh when you call it that, uc.
Momerath probably doesn't, tho... Hehe.
Don't make it email spam, tho. Revamp the boards into something "not-circa-1998" with something more full-featured, and let users choose their own notification options.
Default is "opt-out." They can choose to opt-in and receive some kind of email newsletter, then.

There is an option in "account info" that allows you to control wether you want to get the newsletter or not.
