Naming 'crafting' (A discussion)

This is something that should be addressed if not by the devs, by the community.

We simply need RP elements to describe 'crafting' and how it works, and additionally, a real name for it. ('Crafting' just doesn't jive with scifi)

I may be incoherent at this hour, but let me sum it up for you...
In WoW, crafting is actually crafting. Your Avatar is creating an item using a recipe/instructions and is putting two materials together to create something more useful.

In Vendetta, putting missions like the corvus widowmaker aside (where you are merely letting someone else put together hard-to-find materials) How would you justify a character taking different ores and combining them? How would you describe the process of using rare metals to upgrade your blasters?

Your challenge is laid out before you. Put that grey muscle to work!

"Upgrades";
"Manufacturing";
"Constructing"?

Linguistically I would suggest "manufacturing" for moveable assets such as ships and addons. "Construction" would imply that something is fixed in position.

So, one would construct a station in which to manufacture ships.

Lets just call it warping!

Could we have that awesome Zerg-erupting-from-the-egg sound to go with our warping!?!?

Production. Verbing words alone pisses me off, let alone doing it adverbly.

Equipment creation?

Manufacturing or production both sound good to me, though.

Fabrication?

That sounds like fabrication of evidence, in my opinion.

Lecter: You got me thinking more in the direction of Zerg slaves on a leash. o.0
Yeah, that sort of wouldn't work for anything other than getting yourself killed.

Anyways, the sci-fi element wields the interesting element of actually needing the materials to make stuff. I'm thinking that only a select few people would be able to "craft" things, as they'd have to purchase their entire little manufacturing facility. Financial opportunities, anyone?

What if I just want to craft me some mashed potatoes? You tellin' me I need an entire facility for that!?
Feb 29, 2008 Pyroman_Ace link
Yup Mega, you need an entire production facility, first to grow the potato, then to produce the utensils for mashing and/or peeling the potato. Then you must have a place for the production of a bowl or plate for the holding of the mashed potato, then you need an office for the foremen of said facility, then you need an administrations office, then the mashing center where all the elements come together, then Quality Assurance, the staff breakroom, and the potato eating room.

We do internally call it "Manufacturing". The different stations have various "factories" and so on. I refer to it as "Crafting" in newsposts and outside of the game.. so people will have some idea of what I'm talking about. If "Manufacturing" conveys the idea well enough, then I'll start using that term outside of the game.

I'd think Manufacturing would be a good term Incarnate. Im all for it.

feature bloatening?

w/e i dont think your getting the point of this.

as a previous poster mentioned in WoW it is crafting since you have the plans schematics w/e and gather the materials. In a sci fi situation such as this I think something such as follows would be interesting.

Manufacturing would be used in relation to creation of the elements of both weapons ships and components used within those.

Construction would be in the same vein as manufacturing.

I have an additional suggestion and this is as follows.

I know that this game is space based etc etc and the devs and long term players what to have something that follows the story so in conforming to that we could introduce plans and schematics like that in WoW but instead of Schematic: Explosive Sheep we would have something like Schematic: Silksteel Housing kind of like the stuff you carry on Special Delivery runs.

Putting a new thread regarding this if that was too far off topic.

Manufacturing, looking forward to it.
