I agree Inc. But to be honest, I've never had to resort to trials to start a guild, (and I've started and killed a few now), its also rather easy to create a guild with a message to 100 like "Ello, I wanna start a new guild called Bleh, we will do stuff!" and I usually get enough people with "alts" to help get me started, sometimes they even stick around!

To summarize the wise "softy2" from another thread from the way-back machine:

Just remove the player guilds listing page. Guilds that are not represented will never be heard from (BETA, anyone?), and only the guilds with active players will be recognizable ingame, since that is the only place where you will see their guild tags.

I don't say that i AGREE with softy, but his solution is the easiest-to-implement for the moment.
And, I agree that making guilds "subscriber-only" is an excellent idea. In fact, I thought this was already implemented.

Eh, Leber, I have to disagree with softy2. What if someone wants that name, or something similar? Should a non-existant/unused guild get it as opposed to one that might turn into a huge guild? It goes back to the name thing.

And yeah. Subscriber is a go.

[EDIT] I know you don't "say that i AGREE with softy" but you did bring up his point.

Right now each combination of lettahs for a guild can only belong to a single guild. This necessitates a dispute if two guild's want the same text. Right now the way such disputes are handled with a FCFS policy. Time is the deciding factor, specifically the earlier time.

This is the actual situation, and is all very obvious, but thus far noone's actually addressed either it, or suggested any potential solutions/changes to it. Any changes that do happen will by necessity need to be mechanical, therefor potentially automated; not only is this fair (and arguably the only fair method), but saves on work.

Anything which isn't automated will be subject to griping... Thus! 1. Let Guild's disband after a year of inactivity from all active members. If you really think you deserve rights to a specific permutation of symbols, then surely you can be bothered to pay $10 a year, to make sure your guild doesn't disband. If you're really committed to making a guild grow, and think you deserve a special string of text becaues of that, then surely you can wait a year to make it happen.

But... what if you don't want to wait a year, or the guild in question disbands while your's is in the existing? 2. Let guild commander's change one's guild's name with the council's approval. With those sort of mechanics, all sorts of neat things could happen, like automated guild mergers, under a new name.
