Ship custimization
There's a few threads with various ideas on personalizing your ship, but much like other games i've played where people cry out for in game hair salons and tattoo parlous, i would much rather be able to customize what my character can do than how it looks. so my idea is to have a system set up in station to actually modify what a ship can do. there's plenty of variants to each of the different ships already so it's not really far fetched to consider it possible for some one to dock and have a mechanic tweak their ship. i'm also not talking about just straight out adding on, since that would lead to imbalance, but more of certain trade offs which we already see in variants of the same class ship.
say for example, being able to give up a weapon port for more cargo space, or vise-versa. trading speed for more armor, or just switching out 2 small port weapons for 1 large. think of being able to convert a moth into this big slow hulking beast of a heavy bomber, or a rev c into an extremely fast, unarmed, cargo runner.
certain balances can be created in modifications, say 1S port = 10cu of space, 2S = 1L. the cost of the modifications should also be the same as the ship itself which means an extra money sink. in a game where cash is so easy to come by, money sinks are always a good thing. it would also give us a wider variety of what can be done with each ship, without having to add in more ships.

Agreed with the above.
I could see many examples of this being useful, but it would have to be tweaked a lot before it reached a point of being balanced and fair while still being worthwhile.

the way ports and ship stats work right now i think its impossible for the devs to make modifiers like that
oh and even swichoff addons would lead to unbalanceness
cause i dont want to see a moth that can shoot 12 flares at the same time and has dual agt :P

it is kind of a half assed idea. to better balance it there would have to be limits on just how far you could go. as you pointed out, being able to drop all cargo space in a moth for weapons would be insane. then of course there's some ships, like a vult, that you really wouldnt be able to do much with at all.
still though, i could care less about fancy racing striped or logos on my ship, which is what most of the customization topics seem to ask for. i'd much rather be able to mod my ship to better suite what i want to do. mainly because there's a handful of ships i really love that are just not that useful at higher levels. the rev mk3 for example, dont know what it is about that ship, but it's a reliable bucket of bolts that is none to pleasing on the eyes. kind of reminds me of every car i've ever owned so maybe that's the appeal. i'd like to be able to tweak it a little since i've long outgrown its usefulness.
i dont expect it to be implemented, and even if it was i dont expect it to happen soon since theres plenty of other more important things to get set up first, its just a suggestion so if/when the devs do decide to tackle ship customization it's something else they might consider. of course they would know much better than i how to properly balance a feature like this.

i disagree with ya on that one i think it would be much less time consuming for the devs to give us ship decals, more paint options, n'other goodies than to make modifier addons that would be very hard to balance and to implement
i really dont think we need modifier addons we need more ships that are more unique and more addons/content
i have a good idea for ship decals that would be able to filter out profanity and would still be extremely customizable <- ill post bout that later

heh, imagine what you could do if you replaced all the cargo room in the Moth XC with weapons ports.
I say... wait for it... no.

whats your idea to filter profanity in ship decals?
10 year olds drawing dicks on their ships is an acceptable price to pay so that I can put face.jaypeg on my cents cockpit.

im working on a whole bunch of simple 128x128.png shaped that you can stack on top of eachother to make a logo *cough*Halo2*cough*
but im making alot and you will be able to select gradients lighting and other goodies to make it really customizable
then my idea is for the devs to have a player badge or logo that you make on your site to go with your account
I'll post a readable version of this soon and yes, it will include punctuation and grammar V2.0 beta.

so then no mr bean face pasted over my cockpit?
no face dot jaypeg4u :P ill have it done by tonight
Exactly. We don't /need/ the options to modify ships.. We need more varieties of ships each with their own speciality. Keep the sort of newbie progression ships like the bus, centurion, rev, and such. But for the others maybe modify them so they have a special feature other then the maxmps, turbo, and such?
