Nation Badges

Hi all,

First of all, yes I know there are faction/FF changes coming up, but this is something that could still be interesting.

The idea is for a member of Serco or Itani to have access to Nation badges, to represent their rank in the military of those nations. They could be viewed as military rank, but since we already have badges they're probably easier to implement as a badge.

Badges would be required for access to nation specific equipment (maybe level 1 for Neut 3s, level 2 for the base level nation specific ship, level 3 access to cap ships etc). Possibly all members of a nation automatically start with level 1 in the badge. For purposes of this discussion, I'm assuming that gaining a badge for a nation you don't belong to is out of scope (it probably depends on how the faction changes work out).

This is counter to Predator233's suggestion of making nation ships more universally obtainable, and would help distinguish the different nations a bit more.

To gain points towards a badge, you would need to take part in nation specific missions or actions, such as:

* Border skirmish.
* CTC
* PK's of members of the enemy nation.
* Whatever the PCC comes up with.

This would encourage more aggression between the nations, and give new players a reason to get involved in these sort of activities. Action against your nation could result in your badge being stripped from you.

What about UIT? Well, I see UIT as more mercenary and therefore more willing just to sell to anyone as long as they have the cash, so have less reason to want to restrict their technology on nation lines. Not having nation badges for UIT means that there is more benefit to being Serco or Itani (both these nations have access to their stuff, plus UIT's stuff, whereas UIT only have access to UIT's stuff), which might reduce the current size of the UIT population (which I believe is supposed to be the smallest faction).

Once the faction changes come in, then UIT may get other benefits due to their neutrality.

If people think UIT should have military badges as well, then I wouldn't have a strong objection to this, but I think it fits the background of UIT to have them slightly weaker but more general (my main character is UIT btw).

What do people think?

A good idea.
By the way [ITAN] is already working on a quite similar idea, albeit internal to [ITAN].
Also Cunjo proposed way back a military rank system (search for his post. Cunjo was [SCAR]).

If people liked this, my next suggestion was going to be titled "Guild Badges", allowing guilds to specify the actions which earn badge levels.

I'll have to go an read up on Cunjo's military ranks (my suggestion is really for military ranks, but fitted into the badge system to make implementation easier).

What about personalized guild patches?

A variety of different icons could be chosen from.

The military rank system would work as well. But how would it work? If you are a guild master then do you automatically become a admiral or should that rank be earned through expierience? Or a combination of both?
