Capacitors!
I'm going to throw this idea out there and let everybody else elaborate or come up with sub-ideas:
We ought to have a capacitor addon that can be actively charged from your battery power (e.g. drain battery, charge capacitor) that will be drained by weapons fire once the player activates it.
This would be useful when chasing after those pesky deneb-run contestants, or, in my case, for rapid-refire of a quadrail.

Someone wrote a thing about Cargo-Based Ammo which got me to thinking about cargo based capacitors. Alot of ships that aren't necessarily as suited to combat have a cargo hold that often goes unused. The Revenant for example largely goes unused because it doesn't have enough cargo to be an efficient trading ship, and doesn't have enough weaponry or maneuverability to make a good fighter. If it's cargo bay could be used in some way to help it's fighting however, it could make alot of the obscure ships more popular.
hmmm.. like a moth??

If you replace one of your rails in a quadrail with a capacitor addon, it's still a quadrail? :)
And about chasing down the "pesky deneb-run contestants", what about developing some skills, instead of asking for one-click (tm) solution to your ineptitude?
As DR100 demonstrated, the determined attacker CAN bring down racers, even good ones.

Nobody said the person who started the thread was either skilled or determined, Kat. :P
Basically, our power cells are already capacitors (being charged by our ships' reactors), at least that's the most satisfactory explanation.
I am against this idea as an addition to gameplay mechanics.

Ouch! I post a suggestion and get slammed by Kat and Miharu. You guys make me feel all warm and cuddly inside.
You're welcome! :)
