Yet another weapon idea
I want a weapon that instantly destroys everything around me within 5km.
Just kidding! The "long-range" weapon thread inspired to think of an uber-short-range weapon. Here it is. Please feel free to (constructively) tear it to pieces. :-)
Weapon: Energy Blade
Range: 25m, beam (m, not km)
Energy: 10m/s
Damage: 1500 + 150/s (maybe more? ...3000 + 300/s? ...more? ...less?)
Basically, a beam emanates from your ship, draining energy while its activated. If you hit something with it, they take immediate damage, plus a small amount of additional damage per second if you can keep the blade on target.
The beam does not auto-target: it's up to you to maneuver your ship so that you hit things with it. The beam "sticks out" in a direction according to the weapon slot. I.e., your forward port makes the blade stick out of the front. The side port sticks out to the side, etc.
This adds risk (you risk crashing your ship by flying so close) and it takes serious piloting skills (lending it more to small fighter use than to larger ships) but the payoff is good if you can pull it off. The risk is one reason why I think the damage maybe should be much higher.
Also, there could be a small (20m blade) and a large (50m blade) version of this weapon.
The fact that I would probably not use this weapon (because I'm a poor pilot) doesn't detract from its overall cool-ness. The primary reason I think this weapon would be good are:
1) with glow effects and damage effects, this would look cool.
2) It would allow a new way to duel, requiring new skills and tactics. Hence, more fun for those of you who like to duel.
3) It would be fun to try this against the frigate: a close-range attack vs. a capital ship. Think "stick your sword in its belly and run the length of the ship" :-)
...maybe I watch too much anime, but I think it would have a place in the game and be fairly easy to implement.
also, my apologies if this has been suggested before. I don't remember seeing it though.

oooooooooooo COOL that would be great!!!!!!
ooo000ooo! That would be cool to land on the frigate and activate this then just sit there! mmmm.....roast frigate....
1500 at first is good with me and so is the 150d/s, but it should have more around a 50m-100m extension and be blue!

maybe the color could match your nation color...
Sweet weapon idea. Very original. So original and strange I feel like it oughta be an alien weapon or something. Spaceships with lightsabers, hmmm.
If you did a nose wiggle would your target take 1500 dmg every time? Slash, slash, slash! One possible drawback would be that this weapon would take the "rocket ramming" strategy to a whole new level.
Luke... I am your fah-ther

Difference is, unlike rocket-ramming, you can dodge this.
I would say that yes, if you were skilled enough to actually slash someone three times you would do 3x the damage. But it wouldn't be easy...
slash!
/me watches as prey boosts away
...it would be more like rocket-ramming with a zero-proximity rocket that had no splash damage. In other words, not really rocket-ramming at all. RR'ing is seen as bad because you just boost in close and hit a button... there's little skill involved. With this weapon, you would have to get in close (VERY close) and maneuver the blade against a ship - it wouldn't be easy. Also, because it is an energy weapon, it would be harder to just boost-and-fire.

Instead of just sticking out, how about being able to pull the trigger to make it swipe or thrust?
bah, that would make it too easy!
/me runs in with 3 sabers and slices up[ flag defense >:)
