Of course power, weapons, bigger weapons and ships are the most important, but the game is missing the fun of saving up for other more important items.

For example, how fun would it be if through the game you could save up for, or even win from missions:

radar jammers
cloaking devices
armour
extra burners
cargo expansions
mass expansions
...and so on and so forth

even boarding ships would be awesome, or capturing ships

I too enjoy saving up for something expensive. Even if it is something that only marginally would improve my ship.
