Levels?

May 28, 2007 Seraph link
I have a question regarding the levels. It's kind of philosophical, so this isn't a "quick and dirty" suggestion to improve something, though I know that is what the trend is right now. So forgive that, but this has always kind of bothered me from the very beginning about VO. I don't propose that we have to completely revamp everything, I'd just like to see what people might have to say in response.

Why do people have to level?

I really don't understand the concept and why it's useful. If this is a skill-based game, which seems to be the main push, why try to tier certain players based on a kind of "experience" which really has nothing to do with their "skill" (i. e. one is not a good PVPer by fighting bots alone)? And even if it isn't skill-based, why make people bot for a whole bunch of hours in order to get over an obstacle that really doesn't have much fun in it at all (botting for a bunch of hours), but is actually more like something to do in the wake of having no other activity? It's a self-fulfilling system, but beyond that system, what's the point?

Anyway, that's my beef. I'd like to see what you guys would have to say about it.

Interesting point... It would be neat to see how many people could hold their own with out there No Skill purchased weapons and armourments.

Seems that this would be that the player would have to be more skillfull to get the money to upgrade.. May end up being to hard on some players. But it would give the game an odd balance tha works.

I myself would be fine with this. But I doubt others that have no skill in commanding their vehicles in battle would enjoy this idea.

if that is going to be the case let money have less value

I would give money more value, actually. In place of the levels, I'd make money and fanction status the things that keep newbs from buying every ship in the game immediately. Botting would still have its place, really, but it would be for the sake of commercial enterprise. And, of course, faction status would allow/disallow what specialty ships are available to a player.

BTW, Shadowfire: it's kind of ironic that you say that because I'm probably one of the worst combatants in the game. There is the problem, though, of buying new ships, especially in relation to the value of money. Ships shouldn't be so their expensive that you can never replace them.

Conversely, though, ships always struck me as cheap. They're so easy to replace they're almost expendable. And it seems to me that there's a lot of cash just floating around in VO, getting stockpiled and not doing much. Maybe I'm wrong on that, but that's been my impression.

Because the Devs chose the MMORPG route, key letters be RPG; Role Playing Game. Personally, I favor the MMOFPS style of play, and once you get high enough in levels currently, it becomes an MMOFPS. This is something Incarnate would have to chime in on to give us any real insight why VO developed the way it did.

I think Inc has said something about the license system not being what they wanted for VO, but for reason X they had to put it in. Eventually it will be replaced though.

I'm pretty sure he said that, but I may be wrong...

It will be, perhaps.

I'm fairly certain, within days of the new FF being put in, people will ask for the ability to bribe a faction for standing. This shouldn't be too hard, I hope....

Smittens; yeah

The level system will be replaced by mission trees if I recall correctly.

Mission trees would be awesome, and would make so much more sense to me. That would just boost my enthusiasm about this game 10x over.

Of course, I'm an old EV player, so VO is often times the fabled "MMO-3D-EV" :D And I'm fairly biased this way. But even in terms of RPG's levelling always seemed to be a throwback to decks-of-cards style roleplaying, and no one thought up anyone new even when they make their deck of cards into polygons. It's an unrealistic element. If we can get rid of those unrealistic elements, the game will become more…

SciFi-ish!

(you thought I was going to say "realistic", weren't you?)

VO is, in fact, the closest you'll ever get to having 3D EV on your mac. If you (still) have a mac, that is.

As it is, very little randomness is involved when building up your character, compared to other RPGs out there. It's basically just a treadmill at this point.
