long range support weapon
I suggest having a missile launcher that fires rockets that the player guides with their crosshair. it would move as fast as a gem and would explode when it comes into close proximity of an enemy ship. there would be no lock on for it and it would do massive amounts of damage with only a medium splash radius. It would have no signal and it is a large port wep.
I think a crosshair guided weapon (like that big missile in UT) would be cool, although not too uber, and it should only fly like FA is on, no lateral thrust like a ship has.
Like a TOW missile. Could be fun
Have a small screen pop up instead of the radar and steer it with alternate controls.
Yep, I'll buy it

Impavid: The Redeemer?
Definitely want one of these. I used to *love* picking off larger and more dangerous targets from a distance or around corners in Descent II with the Guided missile.

That thing could be nasty in storms, if you've got the radar and the target doesn't.
All the more reason to implement them :]
Perfect for a two-seater craft.

I second this idea.
OMG, like the missile in HL2? awesome, apporved.
Alright... so what if each player guided missle had one rail gun shot? Or maybe on command would split into a cluster of automated seekers?
Hang on a minute, I'm hearing two different things here... are we talking a missile that is guided using a crosshair from the ship's vantage point (like a laser-guided rocket), or from the missile's PoV (like a TOW-2)?
I'm ok with eiher one, honestly... just thought I'd point out that your desciptions are rather ambiguous.
With the TOW-2 idea, it would be better suited to capital ships or multi-person gunships, since you'd have no control of your ship or warning of approaching enemies while the missile is in flight... on the other hand, that may be a fair tradeoff for a smart and potentially lethal long-range ordnance delivery system. Just make sure it has a manual destruct mechanism so you can cut its flight short or detonate it at nearest proximity to the target manually.
The other idea (guiding it from your ship with a pointer) would be good for long-range Anti-capship missiles, but would be LOS only. Such weapons should be impact fused, rather than proximity.

well its los, but the proximity is fairly small
I agree with Cunjo.
However, retaining control of your own ship whilst directing the missile will be difficult regardless of how it is being targetted.
I therefore restate that a two-seater craft with a weapons officer, so to speak, would be the ideal platform for such a weapon, be it anti-fighter, anti-capship or anti-something else.

the missile is supposed to be fired from far away where you wont be in too much danger, its supposed to have a very long range
I can imagine myself hiding behind a roid in Deneb while missile-running those nasty fighters. OMG it's PERFECT for this! The missiles should be much faster and more maneuverable than a regular ship.
Check out #3 of my reply, this is a great idea on how to actually implement this feature: http://www.vendetta-online.com/x/msgboard/3/16535?page=3#210053
