Tracking Jumps of other Ships

I think that ships equipped with a special, badge earned, S-port add-on tracking device, should have a grouping ability that once grouped, they have a "net of radar" that works in unison with the other ships in the group, and reaches to greater ranges than it would normally. To earn this badge, I would suggest that a group of people can earn it together. In order for the group to earn the badge, they must do various tasks together, like defending a base (for Player Created Stations), or killing more than a certain number of player characters together as a group (500). Keep in mind, this would only work if there was some kind of group stats implemented ever.

The device also allows you to track the jump point of any vessel from a greater distance. This is a useful ability since jumping around from sector to sector to find someone is quite tiring. Each sector you jump into (with your group) the ships that were last there will leave some kind of trail of residue as to where they jumped next. Bear in mind, this is only after you have activated the ability, and that it has a certain amount of power drain from your main battery. In order for it to work, you would want to resist using turbo as much as possible (which is fine since you'll probably be jumping into a couple of empty sectors anyway).

The person in the group who detects the trail should be randomly selected. The selected ship will 'talk' to the other ships, and let them know where it thinks they went. The on all of the group's ship's HUDs will appear the message, and it will be logged into one of the logs so you are able to look back to it if you forget. If someone from the original tracking group is not there, it shouldn't just not work, it would just remain random. If the group is lucky, the randomly selected ship will remain in the group that is still searching, and one of the group member's ships will 'talk' to the other ships, and let them know where it thinks they went.

I was thinking about giving the Warthog Territorial Defender special abilities regarding to this, like longer trail times, less energy drain, etc.

This has been mentioned before, but still a good idea.

One amendment: The ship that tracks should not be selected randomly, but by distance, and possibly ship size (larger ships might be able to house bigger computers).

tosh-
Good Idea, rather than have it just random it could be based on something else like distance, and possibly by the distance to eachother too. So if you jump to another sector (empty) your group would need to 'huddle' into a formation that would be best for detecting little bits of residue from the tracked ships engines. Line abreast formation would work nicely.

The point here is to add some kind of group activity that is actually useful, and never done before.

Well, you can find anyone in this manner, as long as they were there in a reasonable amount of time before you.
