Sure! It also proves that you might want to ask around a bit more before posting. ;) heh.
mea culpa, mea culpa, mea maxima culpa :)
The point is, trav: did you try them? There's 6 racecourses as I recall. Plus I know the devs are working on at LEAST one more.
As a matter of fact, I haven't had a chance to try them yet, but I have had a quick look at them on the wiki and you know, they didn't quite match what I meant in my previous post.
I'm thinking more along the lines of actual racing, perhaps with weapons, perhaps not, but with courses in the form of the red bull air race, where pilots are flying in a set course around pylons and so on.
Those tubes look hellish good but they are after all mostly against the clock aren't they?

Have someone get in behind you with an ADV rail IBG and see how "mostly against the clock" it is.
why dont they just have the guides make them more race courses? they can make craploads of em in short time. the devs could fly around them and decide whether it should be in the game.
I think that there was a movement to get the devs to let the guides place entrance/exit "rings" in open space around an asteroid sector. Essentially like the rings on the existing racetracks, but without the "Habitrail" tubes. I recall discussing this with one of the guides, I forget who.
You would have to go through the start gate, travel through the field to the halfway gate, go through it, and then retrace your route to the end gate, which would be kinda near the first gate.
In order to avoid boring "infiniboost straight-line" racing, I was thinking the asteroid field would be pretty full, requiring a lot of dodging around asteroids, a lot of which rotate. Maybe bots or Unaligned pirates would make the race more interesting.
Anyway, yeah, a more "open" racecourse would be much more fun, like the rocket-plane racing you mention.

There is nothing new under the sun.
Those ideas in that thread though are pretty much exactly what I was thinking. I hadn't taken the thought to the level of street racing missions though, but that idea is a good one.
To link it in with this thread though, how bout using the uber-ships which carry only disabling type weapons on them but travel at up to 500m/s without turbo? Highly expensive, very fancy piloted bullets.
