You can't see me!!!
ok... crazy idea that is sure to get flamed... but has anyone considered cloaking devices yet? here is my idea a device that leaves you invisible to radar and to lock ons by an enemy... also hides you from the page that shows who is in sector... maybe even physically make you invisible?
ah but the catch... battery will not recharge while cloak is active or will do it at in incredibly reduced rate... so weapons are useless while cloaked... and also you can't run very far without turning it of...
also cloak fails when you are hit by any weapons...
advantages... traders and miners who are willing to move slow through dangerous territory... pirates sneaking up on prey... near death escapes... and here is the fun one recon missions... oh... and for the coveted combat photographer trying to get a shot in the middle of a battle.

It's a good idea and it has been suggested many times before. I do hope that it will eventually be implemented, and I think it should work in a similar fashion to what you suggested.
I think that it should just make you invisible on radar so people don't know your coming and couldn't lock on to you to use autoaim or the leadoff indicator. Of course the cloak would drain your battery, so you wouldn't be able to fire weapons or boost for more than a few seconds with the cloak engaged.
Maybe eventually there could be a more advanced and expensive version that would make you completely invisible (not just to radar).

There may be some devices that help lessen your radar cross-section coefficient... but more on that in all good time.

They'll probably function exactly opposite to the range extender, by limiting the range at which you'll be detected.
Let's say we meet in a sector. I've got a small stealth device that masks my detection down to 1000 meters, but you have a range extender that extends by 1000 meters. Now you would see me at 2000 meters, but not at 2001 (normal range is 5000 meters)
Someone without an extender wouldn't see me until I'm within 1000 meters, unless they scan the heavens manually and zoom in a lot. If I hide in a dust cloud around a mining station, I'm completely invisible until it's far too late to run.

Well then I think there should be a 5000m cloak. So you'd be entirely invisible to normal ships, and ones with radar extenders can see you only from 1000m or closer.
