weapons convergence
So, I've been playing a lot of hardcore flight sims lately, and it stuck me that something there might be useful in a game like VO.
The thing is guns convergence, let me explain what it means. In VO, your autoaim is set to your primary gun, and if you have both guns set to primary, it will set to your left gun. (I've not flown a valk or a maud in ages, so somebody can tell me which gun it is set to if you have all 3 guns set to primary, i remember it being the left one even here.)
When you fire, your left gun goes to the autoaim position, while your right gun will go on a parallel track. This is simply how the VO autoaim works.
In WW2 era fighter planes, many planes have guns on their wings. These guns are not set to fire straight ahead. Instead, they are "harmonized" to converge on somewhere about 100-300 feet in front of the plane. The idea is of course (a) you want to do lots of damage at one spot in the enemy (b) having wing guns firing straight ahead is plane silly because of the wide division between the wings.
Now, in VO, it'll be nice if we allowed to set weapons convergence. The way I see how to implement it without much recoding is simply to let us *set* where the VO will set your autoaim to. In other words, instead of automatically setting the autoaim to the left gun of the primary, let us set where the autoaim "cone" direction ourselves. And then have all the guns fire at the center of the cone, giving us a "convergence" effect. Of course, this means that autoaim has to be turned off. What you have effectively set is the direction of both your guns.
Why do we want convergence? Well, I think it will be useful for the good aimers in this game. Often, in a knifefight, only one of your twin neutrons/whatever hit because of the parallel track of your firing pattern.
Anyway, back to flying!

search function super strike!

and it sounds a bit like this recent one too http://vendetta-online.com/x/msgboard/3/15854#199971
you sure about the left gun thing?
It looks like every gun aims on its own. At least on the maud. if you get really close to a crate in a maud with gauss, target and shoot at it, your shots will cross right in front of your face and space out wildly.
maybe one of your guns is just outside the autoaim range when you get really close.

i think spuck is right on this.
auto-aim is set to work within the cone of effect for the given weapoon. the better the auto-aim a weapon has (eg, agt) the wider the cone (oppose rail where the cone is non-existant).
so, because of your weapon spacing, if one side is within the cone then auto-aim is effective. if the other side the cone does not reach target, then it fires ahead (no auto-aim).
that's my understanding of it and it boils down to a recent discussion on weapon displacement (wich had roots an even older discussion about the raptor's too-af-out displacement).

Heh. Pwned by Spuck and his search-h4x.
AFAIK, the autoaim is tied to the left gun, and the right gun just goes on a parallel track. To see it, simply zoom and fire.
I know about the dual gauss heading off different direction effect (I think it happens with neuts too but they are so small it's hard to notice it). I think this happens when one of the gun is in the "autoaim cone" and the other is not in the cone. But if both are in the cone, they will go on parallel tracks. If they both have separate autoaim tracks, they will converge (and that's what I was hoping to get at.)

Pretty nice. I'd like the ability to adjust my convergence.
Yep, me too, especially on those dang flechettes
Convergence would make Flechettes useful... =(
