Countermeasures

When you start hearing the beeping of homing missiles, the only way to avoid them is to move around as much as possible and pray. Meanwhile you dont get much chance to return fire.

You should be able to fire some countermeasures, which could lure away a rocket. Maybe something like...

* Heat Emitting Flare - Lures away heat seeking missiles
* Radar Jamming Flare - Disrupts the lock on homing missiles causing them to revert to plain unguided style, which you could then try to dodge

These could be tertiary weapons or something, so as not to interfere with your other guns.

Hull Points

I think that hull points are quite low considering the strength of the weapons. Most fights seem to last seconds, when they should last minutes. Then there would be true wars, with both sides having multiple players it might last 20 minutes.

It would mean more skill is required to make repeated hits and kill your enemy.

Mines

Stations should have some form of way to target and destroy mines within close proximity of a station. Which would eliminate station mining.

These are all interesting suggestions and, with the exception of the hull points increase, these points have been brought up before - not in quite awhile though.

I don't want my 1:1 dogfights to last minutes! At least not in our current economy. If it became quite a bit more expensive to repair or replace ships I could see a place for that.

It is possible to continue combat while the missiles are tracking you. A pilot can keep changing direction and speed enough to confuse the missile and still keep firing on the enemy.
You don't need to run far away, you just need to stay in motion.

"Most fights seem to last seconds"!!!! It's really rare that I have fights that take under a min. Maybe this is because I generally just ignore noobs attacking me, but 10min fights definately happen, especially if one of the pilots likes to generally back up during a fight.
If the devs multiply the HP by 10 anyone could take a flag in a cent and not return any fire and as long as it wasn't 4 on 1 they could probably make it back without much of a problem. Dodging isn't really that hard in this game.
If you were able to turbo then you would never die.

Station AI. The devs have said that they are going to make bots around stations that do things like inforce no firing, de-mine, etc. They haven't yet but they said they will.

I think the decoy ideas are good.

I'm going to disagree with Whistler. The up the hp is the best suggestion I've ever heard. Multiple all hp by 10 and you will have a MUCH more balanced game. Then divide ALL trading profits by 8 and increase the price of all ships and ships' systems by 1/4. I know, I know, Celebrim will say that money is not the way to balance the game. But it WOULD be nice.
